Another part of our Wamuran history was demolished yesterday (on 9th April) - the Old Wamuran Post Office, on D’Aguilar Highway, bought last year for the Wam School grounds.
The wonderful sketch here was done in 1996 at the 75th Anniversary of the Wamuran Schooling, by Cathy Evan’s, a Caboolture High art student. Catherine is now a well-known artist in Yeppoon.
Originally, mail to Wamuran was dropped off by the Kilcoy Coaches at the property (then a horse change-over stop for the Coaches, & now with semi-trailers in their yard) on the corner of Turnbull Rd & Woodford Rd (now known as D’Aguilar Highway). Once the Caboolture to Woodford rail line opened in 1909, the Wam Railway Station became the Post Office for the mail, until the Wamuran General Store opened in 1921 (where the Wam Country Meats now is). Up to the day this old shop was demolished a few years ago, you could see the Post Office window & post box hole (all boarded up).
During the 40’s, a Mr & Mrs Smith owned the shop/post office; but as Wam grew in population, Mr Smith ( always known as Smithy) realised Wam need a stand-alone post office. In 1949, Smithy got permission to build a post office. In October 1951, Smithy opened the Wam Post Office, where the building still was until demolished yesterday. It was always a Post Office Agency, until Australia Post decided to change over all PO Agencies to ‘Licensed Post offices’ ( known as LPOs) in 1993.
I (Hilary Berger) purchased the Wamuran PO business on October 13th 1993, & it had to be changed over to Wamuran LPO that day. My sister & her husband (a builder) purchased the building. Unfortunately, due to an accident (I slipped on the wet grass at home taking the rubbish bin down to the house on garbage day on Dec 22nd 1999 - last century). I had to sell the PO in October 2001 due to my permanent damage. However, when it sold, the Wam PO, had to be moved to ‘more suitable premises’ due to stairs, etc. Eventually , in 2002 it moved into its present shop, as (the late) John Torrens, the owner of the top Shopping Centre, built an extension to accomodate the post office.
The old PO building was sold to ‘Devon’s Windscreens’; & Devon owned it until the sale in 2025 for the Wam School. I was sad to see it knocked down; but it will now be part of the school grounds. l always said that Wam School was the only school in Australia that owned its own post office. It was surrounded on 3 sides by the school grounds.
For lots more history of Wamuran, please visit the Old Wam School, as we have 100’s of pages of history on a USB for $30 only. These can be upgraded every so often, as more history research is entered all the time.
