The Gearys Gap/Wamboin Landcare Group is a members of the Yass Area Network of Landcare Groups (YAN), as we are located in the upper part of the Yass River catchment. YAN is commemorating the 30th anniversary of its operations.

The Yass Area Network of Landcare Groups (YAN) was formed in 1996 and is now celebrating 30 Years of Landcare in the Yass Valley. Learn more at: https://yan.org.au/yan-blog/268-yan-celebrating-30-years-of-landcare-in-the-yass-valley

YAN was established to address the need for an integrated approach to land management and natural resource issues across the Yass area. The Network originally incorporated 15 Landcare groups, including:

1) Binalong
2) Bookham / Burrinjuck
3) Bungendore
4) Collector
5) Geary’s Gap / Wamboin
6) Goodhope / Boambolo
7) Gundaroo
8 ) Hall
9) Jerrawa Creek
10) Manton
11) Murrumbateman
12) Narrangullen
13) Sutton
14) Taylor’s Creek
15) Yass Urban

Many of these groups have since wound up. Some, like Yass Urban and Bookham/Burrinjuck, have evolved into YAN’s current Bowning-Bookham Landcare Group , Friends of Yass Gorge and Yass Landcare groups. While others, like Bungendore, Geary’s Gap/Wamboin, Murrumbateman Landcare Group
and Sutton Landcare, are still active today.

At its inception, the estimated early YAN membership was around 450 landholders.
Between 1996-97, there were 69 new and continuing projects being undertaken across the Network. These projects drew on over $1.8 million in government funding and more than $2 million in community contributions - incredibly impressive!

If you were a member of one of our past groups or involved in any early projects over the late 1990s or early 2000s, please get in touch with us. As part of YAN’s 30 year milestone, we’re planning a series of stories highlighting the people, projects and moments that have shaped YAN and would love your help!

Some some parts of Wamboin and Bywong have problematic infestations of Noisy Miners. You may care to respond to this ANU/Birdlife Australia survey on the topic:

Subject: Addressing the impact of overabundant Noisy Miners on woodland birds - SURVEY
To: Birds on Farms - ACT-Yass

Dear All,
BirdLife Australia, through an Australian Government Saving Native Species Program grant, is partnering with Australian National University to develop a decision support tool and series of workshops to assist land managers with addressing the impact of overabundant Noisy Miners on woodland bird communities. The Noisy Miner is a native honeyeater species, however due to human-induced habitat modifications it can become overabundant and aggressively exclude other smaller species and drive down biodiversity. The aggressive exclusion of woodland birds by overabundant Noisy Miners is listed as a key threatening process under the EPBC Act. We are gathering information from landowners and land managers on their current knowledge of the threat of overabundant Noisy Miners and their willingness to implement measures to address the threat, to help guide our decision support tool and workshops. We would be very grateful if you could spend approximately 15 minutes to fill out this survey:

This survey will close on Monday 16 February.

The Noisy Miner is a large honeyeater native to eastern Australia, found in woodlands and open forests from Tasmania to Queensland. We are assessing the current knowledge on the issues caused by over-abundance of the species.
