Cameron talks to NBN news about why our community of Walcha is celebrating the withdrawal of Origins Sky Ridge Wind Factory. That’s two projects in 3 months for the New England withdrawn.
Now we keep asking this Minns Albanese Labor Government - why are they continuing with forcing a transmission corridor from Bayswater through Walcha when there will be no generation to connect to it at this “central south” hub that the transmission line was detoured to?
Time to rethink their strategy before they waste $20billion of our dollars.

When a project of this scale is proposed across your community, you learn. You read. You ask questions.

And after a year of doing exactly that, it’s striking to see others looking at the New England REZ and raising the same fundamental mistakes and concerns.

At what point do the questions become too obvious to ignore?

We never set out to become experts in energy policy, transmission planning or electricity markets.

But the unanswered questions around cost lead us to realise a cost analysis was never done before declaring the REZ - so now we are asking this before the Supreme Court, with a hearing scheduled for March 2027.

Renewable energy is important. So are farming, food security, healthy ecosystems and the communities that depend on them.

The real question is whether our children are getting the whole picture.

$20 BILLION+ ON THE LINE. Developers are leaving. Farmers are facing forced acquisition. And the government is still charging ahead.

How much more evidence does the Minns Albanese Labor Government need before it stops and reassesses this project?

In the middle of a cost-of-living crisis, with the circumstances changing and another developer leaving the region, can this government seriously justify pushing ahead with a $20 billion+ transmission line?

This week, farmers began receiving opening letters for forced acquisition. Meanwhile the studies haven’t even been completed yet to see if this project stacks up.

The government needs to stop, listen and reassess before pushing this project any further.

Another one bites the dust.

Yet another renewable energy project has been pulled from our region - this time by Origin Energy, citing economic viability.

Why are we still pushing ahead with some of the biggest transmission infrastructure in NSW when there are not projects to connect to it? Huge costs. Huge impacts. But where’s the energy?

EnergyCo have started sending out formal acquisition letters to those affected down the proposed New England transmission line.

Landholders are being forced to navigate profound uncertainty around their homes, farms and businesses: how long will they have access to their land? What disruption will construction cause? How can they plan, invest or make business decisions when they don’t know what the future of their property looks like?

And all of this is happening before the project has been properly assessed as the right option environmentally, socially and economically.
At the same time, billions of taxpayer dollars are being committed to a project where key studies and assessments are still underway.
How is it acceptable to begin acquiring people’s land before the project has even been fully assessed?

Landholders have started receiving acquisition letters from EnergyCo in Tamworth, Uralla and Walcha, with affected farmers expected to receive them the full length of the 305-kilometre transmission corridor.

How can farmers and businesses plan, invest and operate when they don’t know how long construction will disrupt their land - or when they’ll have full use of it again?

Regional businesses deserve certainty. This is not a minor disruption to a business - it’s people’s livelihoods.
