- Restoring Ecosystems for Post-Traumatic Growth -
A new kind of healing begins with the land.
At Whole Picture Permaculture, we believe that healing the land is inseparable from healing people. Our new project initiative, grounded in ecosystem restoration and post-traumatic growth, is designed to offer exactly that—healing, purpose, and transformation for individuals and communities through hands-on ecological regeneration.
Imagine this:
A group of community members gathers on the land, connecting with native plants, ancient trees, and each other. They return weeks later to find the land cleared and raw—like a scar exposed. Here, they are introduced to the concept of Post-Traumatic Growth—how trauma, like disturbance in nature, can be the foundation for new strength and resilience.
- They learn how ecosystems bounce back—how lopped trees reshoot, mulch nourishes soil, and new life rises from what looked like devastation.
- They plant, build, restore—physically and emotionally—seeing regeneration unfold both around them and within.
This isn’t just land care—it’s people care.
Through ongoing participation, group reflections, and community connection, Pheonix Project becomes a living example of how ecological succession mirrors personal growth. Participants become leaders, bringing this approach to other communities and building an army of restoration—people who now serve life, healing, and food security.
The potential is enormous: healing trauma, restoring ecosystems, growing food, building climate resilience, and most importantly reconnecting people to purpose and place.
We’re not just regenerating landscapes.
We’re restoring lives.

Kaurna Country! 🔥

Last month the Kaurna Firesticks team hosted State of Environment representatives from across Australia at Kauwi-marnirla (Field River) 👏🏽

The Kaurna crew ran a workshop along one of our priority burn sites and discussed the importance of incorporating Indigenous Land Management into SOE reports. Alongside Uncle Frank Wanganeen Kaurna-Narungga man and elder, the Kaurna Firesticks team provided insights on the importance of healing Country together.

🌿 Kaurna team will continue to work alongside communities and stakeholders to improve the health of Country through invasive plant clearance and cultural burns.

"Nature is 'Invasive! Species are not"
Brian Wehlburg, Holistic Management educator
Nature naturally 'invades' gaps in the environment, to increase life and resilience, often filling it with so called 'tough' species which we regard as pests or weeds. The 'Rule Of Succession' states: a species will move into an environment when conditions suit its establishment and will only leave that environment when conditions no longer suit its reproduction"
