Gunaru G'day, we're Josh & Megan. Evolve with us, as we try to build a passivhaus & live more sustainably on Wiradyuri country.

We had some very special visitors this morning.

For more than 20 minutes, a and her joey grazed peacefully on the lush green grass surrounding our home. Curious and completely at ease, they slowly bounced closer until they were standing at our pop-out window, gazing in at us as intently. I ended up opening the sliding the door to invite them in for breakfast, but she mustn’t have liked the smell of me.

Every image, bar the last one was captured from inside the house through our triple-glazed windows. Being immersed in nature is what Gunaru is all about. From the very first time we set foot on this property, the wildlife encounters left a lasting impression on us. Those moments inspired a dream, and that dream carried us through every challenge and bump in the road as we endeavoured to create a home here that would feel like it’s a part of the landscape.

This morning was one of those gentle reminders that the journey was worth it. 🦘💚

It was a special moment when our nearly 4-year-old nephew Reggie picked some of our Pink Ladies to take home. He took a bite and said:

“Oh my god, this is amazingggg”.

Hearing those words come out of his mouth was a welcome moment of joy and gratitude for life, on a sombre day, as we had lost a dear family friend to cancer that day. Thanks Reg! 🥰

It was another fun weekend cooking, we made the most delicious crackers we’ve ever tasted from leftover sourdough starter. This loaf of sourdough was lighter and fluffier than last weeks because we had time to let it proof overnight this time. Also started fermenting all our chilli and capsicums to make fermented sauce next weekend. There was also a bit of chasing chooks in circles to stop them from eating our veggie garden! 🌶🐔🍞🥳

Love the weather this time of year! It was good to get a bit of time to slow down and enjoy it. We finished restoring an old coop that was going to be thrown out and finally got a couple of chooks. (Names pending, I want to go with "Fluffbutt" as suggested by our 3yr old nephew & "Rosemary" as suggested by our niece, however Megan doesn’t think Fluffbutt is an appropriate name for a lady).

We were excited about harvesting apples, pears, limes, jalapenos, cherry tomatoes, capsicums, beans, and lettuce.

We made apple turnovers with our pink lady apples and also made our first sourdough today, crikey a lot of time goes into make a loaf of sourdough! About to taste it.

It's been fun and games at Gunaru with our niece Vallie having a sleepover. Vallie loved the taste of hand picked plums, strawberries, and carrots...not so much cherry tomatoes, had to spit that one out 🤢😂 Also loved some yoga with her Aunty Fave and building a fortress with Uncle Joshy.

Tonight's smoky sunset. I was waiting for the Sun to hit the horizon for a photograph, but the smoke was so thick that the Sun disappeared before my eyes well above the horizon. But I did manage to get this rosella in a dead eucalyptus and a shot of the Sun with a visible Sun spot.

Thank goodness for a cool change, that was a filthy week of weather. Our thoughts go out to all affected by the dreadful fires.

Maybe 1/20th of the Tommy toes from our wicking bed plant. Wish we had counted them, but we've eaten a heap already.
