One Seed One Community

Grow, Share, Connect and save a rare bean. Join in a community wide project to bring back a rare bean and enjoy growing delicious beans in the process. The Bega Valley Seed Savers and the Bega Valley Shire Library are on a mission to increase numbers of the Cupidon bean which is scarce in Australia to share with other seed saving groups around the country. Share the growing

journey with other participants along the way and then get together for a fun seed processing day at the end of harvest. Lets all grow together

How it works
• Collect your free seeds and grow guide at any Bega Valley Shire Library branch between Monday 23 October – Friday 10 November.

• Come along to the optional free workshop at Bega Library on Friday October 27. The Bega Valley Seed savers will be sharing their expert tips and tricks about getting started with growing veggies and seed saving.

• Plant your seeds during the first week of November. Grow and harvest your beans, eat some and save some.

• Share your growing journey on the FB page https://www.facebook.com/events/208575572133879/?active_tab=discussion

• Drop your saved seeds back at Bega Valley Shire Library branch. Or bring them along to the processing day to catch up with others while we shell, pack and chat together. https://www.facebook.com/groups/begavalleyseedsavers/

One seed One Community 2026 – Wrap up
The One seed One Community project was a great success, once again. Bega Valley Seed Savers and BVSL would like to say a big thank you to everyone who grew the Pink Bumblebee Tomato over summer. We far exceeded our own expectations of the amount of seeds returned by our community growers. The returned seeds weighed in today at 309 grams. Which is between about 92000 and 150000 seeds, WOW.
We also heard lots of conversation and positive feedback about the joys of growing and eating the very tasty tomato.
The seeds will be shared with other seed banks in the state.
Well done everyone.😊

Any guesses on how many Pink Bumblebee seeds are here? We had to go looking for a huge jar to put them in as all the regular jars were too small. Orange for scale. It weighed in at a whopping 309 grams of seed!!!! Which is a lot of little tomato seeds.

The little green fruits are forming. It's so exciting! However it's going to be HOT, HOT, HOT later this week. So hot that plants will be stressed and fruit in direct sun can get sun burnt. We'll be draping an old sheet over ours when the temperature goes over 35. A bit of scrap shadecloth would work too. We'll also make sure we're keeping them well watered.
For those growing in pots, particularly those big black plastic ones, it might be a good idea to make sure the pots themselves don't get direct sunlight and possibly cook some roots.
What's your strategy for getting your Pink Bumblebees through the heatwave?

How is your Pink Bumblebee tomato going? This one is looking very healthy and has plenty of flowers. No fruit yet though! But given it was planted at the start of November we're pretty happy with it's progress so far.
