🦅 Keep Watch: H5 Bird Flu Season is Here
Giinagay mob,
August to November is high-risk season for H5 bird flu (H5N1) arriving in Australia, carried by migrating shorebirds, seabirds and seals. It hasn't reached our shores yet — but staying alert helps protect Country, our wildlife, and our communities.
We know many of these species carry deep cultural meaning and totemic connection for our people. News of sickness or death among them can be distressing, and that's okay to feel. We share this information so we can look after them, and each other.
What to look out for:
🔸 Sick or dead birds, seabirds, shorebirds, birds of prey, or seals
🔸 Shaking, circling, or twisted necks
🔸 Can't stand or fly
🔸 Swollen head/eyes, breathing trouble, sudden death
If you spot it:
📸 RECORD — time, date, location, photos (from a distance)
📞 REPORT — Emergency Animal Disease Hotline 1800 675 888 (24/7)
🚫 AVOID — don't touch or go near sick/dead animals

A scientist observes, tests, and refines understanding of the world — building knowledge through careful observation, generation after generation. By that definition, Aboriginal people have been Australia's first scientists for over 65,000 years. 🔬
This Junior Ranger is learning the same way his Elders and the Rangers before him did — by watching Country closely. From reading smoke on a cultural burn, to studying a specimen under the microscope, to walking the coastline with the Bellingen Valley Indigenous Rangers — it's all the same practice: observe, understand, pass it on.
Long before "science" was a word, Gumbaynggirr people were reading plant flowering to predict when fish were running, tracking animal behaviour through the seasons, and using cultural burning to manage fuel loads and regenerate land — practices now validated by contemporary ecology and fire science.
For the Traditional Custodians of the Bellingen Valley, caring for Country has never been a program. It's a responsibility carried for tens of thousands of years — and it's being carried forward again, one generation at a time.

Today, Gumbaynggirr kinship groups came together to care for Country — southern Gumbaynggirr working alongside our Dunghutti mob, continuing a cultural practice that stretches back through generations. Cultural fire. Burning for biodiversity. The diversity of community coming together for Country.
Yurruungga Aboriginal Corporation would like to show our appreciation for everyone who made this culturally significant project come to fruition.
🖤💛❤️ To all our Gumbaynggirr mob — what an honour it is to work together for our homelands, and alongside our Dunghutti mob. It's an honour to see our mobs working together for Country, just as our ancestors did.

International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples — 9 August

Today we stand with First Peoples across the globe. Since 1982, when the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations first gathered, and formalised by the United Nations in 1994, this day honours the distinct cultures, languages and knowledge systems that Indigenous communities have carried for millennia.

On Gumbaynggirr Country, this is a day to reflect on Wajaarr Birriimba — Country is Alive. Our Lore, language and cultural practice are not history — they are living, active authority guiding how we care for Country today and into the future.

We honour our Elders, our language holders, our Rangers, and every First Nations community walking this path of survival and resurgence. 🔥🌊🌿

Yurruungga Aboriginal Corporation, together with partner organisations, will be conducting a cultural burn at Scotts Head on Tuesday 11 August — dependent on confirmation from Country.

📍 Meet at the car park above Little Beach
🕗 8:00 a.m. start, burn to proceed soon after (subject to weather and cultural conditions)

Community members are warmly invited to come along, observe, and support cultural fire practices grounded in knowledge and care — an ancient practice caring for Country the Gumbaynggirr way.

🌏 LAUNCHING THE BELLINGEN VALLEY INDIGENOUS RANGERS 🌏

Today we launch the Bellingen Valley Indigenous Rangers.

As the Traditional Owners of the Budaabang Wajaarr, Bellingen Valley, in the heartlands of the Gumbaynggirr Nation, we have cared for this Country for over 60,000 years. Kinship is not a choice — it is our obligation to Mimmi Miirlarl, Mother Earth. This is the oldest living culture on Earth, now working hand in hand with the latest technology to protect Culture and Country for generations to come.

Our Rangers walk alongside all levels of government, environmental agencies, non-government partners, and every community that calls this Valley home — working together toward our proposed Bellinger Valley Indigenous Protected Area, 81,080 hectares from the Dorrigo Plateau to Sea Country.

We believe knowledge is key. And we believe that all people who share our homelands, in the heartlands of the Gumbaynggirr Nation, are Guardians of Country too.

This is Wajaarr Birriimba — Country is Alive.

Do you have a passion for Caring for Country and a strong connection to Culture?
Yurruungga Aboriginal Corporation (YAC) is inviting Expressions of Interest from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to join our team as Wajaarr Guardians in the beautiful Bellingen Valley Indigenous Protected Area (IPA).
We're currently seeking:
🌱 1 x Male Gumbaynggirr Wajaarr Guardian (Part-time – 21 hrs/week)
🌱 1 x Female Gumbaynggirr Wajaarr Guardian (Part-time – 21 hrs/week)
🌱 Casual Junior Rangers (1 x Male & 1 x Female)
As a Wajaarr Guardian, you'll work alongside Elders, Traditional Owners and Rangers to protect Country through cultural knowledge and modern land management. From cultural burning and habitat restoration to protecting cultural heritage and engaging with community, you'll play a vital role in looking after Country for future generations.
💚 No previous ranger experience? No problem! If you're passionate, willing to learn, and enjoy working outdoors, we encourage you to apply. Training and mentoring will be provided.
This is more than a job—it's an opportunity to strengthen culture, protect Country, and make a lasting difference for community.
