This is a tremendous step forward!

In NAIDOC Week of 2019, the then-Labor opposition announced that we would implement a state response to the Uluru Statement from the Heart - Voice, Truth and Treaty.

We have delivered a nation-leading First Nations Voice to Parliament and with today’s State Budget we proudly take the next steps in our journey to implementing Truth-telling and Treaty by investing $8.5 million over four years to establish a commission to undertake these activities.

I want to be clear on what this commitment is and is not.

Truth-telling isn’t about division or blame - it’s about giving Aboriginal people the platform to share their history and experience of past policies so we can build a shared understanding for our State.

Treaty isn’t about taking anything from anyone else - It’s about supporting capacity-building, economic development and enterprise, self-determination, and collaborative engagement with government agencies.

I can’t wait to get this important work underway.

Today is National Sorry Day: the start of National Reconciliation Week.

We acknowledge the Stolen Generations and the traumatic impact of forced child removals on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Today is National Sorry Day.

We remember and honour the Survivors of the Stolen Generations and their descendants. Sorry Day is a time to reflect on our shared history and commit to a future built on truth, healing, and reconciliation.

Let us listen. Let us learn. Let us walk together.
