If the learned and worldly-wise men of this age were to allow mankind to inhale the fragrance of fellowship and love, every understanding heart would apprehend the meaning of true liberty, and discover the secret of undisturbed peace and absolute composure.

What is lost when development is measured mainly by what can be counted?
For decades, progress has been assessed through rates of growth, levels of income, the reach of infrastructure, and the scale of production. These measures can reveal important dimensions of social and economic life. Yet they are less able to account for the dignity of human beings, the quality of social bonds, the wisdom held in diverse cultures, the responsibilities owed to future generations, or humanity’s relationship with the natural world. ~Bahá’í News service

The Holy Spirit Operates in Cycles

While the Holy Spirit is always present, there is a greater outpouring of this power associated with the appearance of a Manifestation of God. This increase of spiritual power has a beneficial and productive effect upon the minds and souls of human beings, resulting in spiritual development and intellectual progress.

The Holy Spirit brings about change in humanity and civilization in three ways:

First, through its direct impact upon those followers who are obedient to the message.

Second, through the overriding power of the Holy Spirit, which calls mankind in general to change and to act in fulfillment of the Will of God.

Third, through the indirect repercussions experienced by those—including the leaders of nations and institutions—who disregard the teachings of the Manifestation and thereby deprive themselves of divine guidance. Motivated only by self-interest and materialism, and having no counsel to turn to except their own finite and fallible minds, they make wrong decisions. In the end, they bring about their own downfall and, with it, the collapse of the institutions or countries they lead.

Upon the ruins of the old order, the seeds are sown for the rise of a new one.

“Man’s free will is limited to his moral and behavioral choices. Beyond this realm, he exercises little control over the conditions and events of life. He may become the captain of his soul, but never the absolute master of his fate.”

“Should you arrive at the realization that the soul is the most valuable asset you possess—indeed, the most important possession you could ever own—you will naturally be deeply concerned with cherishing it, nourishing it, and protecting it. You will be eager to take the best possible care of it. Then will the bounty flow.”
