Species Recovery Plans are a vital mechanism for preventing threatened species going extinct.

Have your say on the gang-gang cockatoo recovery plan

Gang-gang cockatoo populations are estimated to have declined by nearly 70 per cent, and numbers continue to fall. The species was listed as endangered in 2022.

The draft National Recovery Plan for the gang-gang cockatoo has been released, and community members are invited to provide feedback. Consultation closes on 7 October.

Recovery plans identify the actions needed to support the long-term survival of threatened species in the wild. Protecting and restoring species such as the gang-gang cockatoo depends on collaboration between governments, scientists, communities, land managers, First Nations peoples and many others.

Have a Plan B for wet tracks 🌧️

Recent rain and flooding has left some tracks in Victoria’s parks very wet, especially in the Mallee and along the Murray River.

If you’re planning a visit, it’s important to check park conditions before you go.

Wet tracks are easily damaged by vehicles. Avoiding them helps protect the environment and make sure we can keep them open for everyone to enjoy.

If your planned destination is affected, have a backup option ready.

A smart decision today can prevent months of damage.

Celebrating 40 years of landcare in Victoria 🌱

Landcare Australia is proud to support Landcare Victoria as they celebrate their 40th anniversary with the Victorian Landcare Forum taking place in late August.

Landcare evolved in Victoria through an initiative of Joan Kirner, former Minister for Conservation, Forests and Lands, and Heather Mitchell, former President of the Victorian Farmers Federation. With the generous support of community members, farmers and Victorian departmental officers, Heather Mitchell and Joan Kirner were able to launch ‘landcare’ in a small town in central Victoria in November 1986.

In 1989, the national landcare movement was officially recognised, with Rick Farley of the National Farmers' Federation (NFF) and Phillip Toyne of the Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF) successfully encouraging the Hawke Government to commit to supporting the emerging landcare movement. The national formation of the landcare movement brought farmers and conservationists together to resolve environmental issues, and landcare continues to bring environment, agriculture and community together to shape a more sustainable future. 🌿

Congratulations to Landcare Victoria on this milestone, and to the individuals, groups and organisations getting their hands dirty with landcare. 👏

Rabbits are becoming a big problem for revegetation sites in our region. At the Milloo St Wetlands in Swan Hill volunteers have had to install the triangle corflute guards.
These furry little ravenous diggers have no hesitation stripping our established natives and even digging them out of the ground!
