Today is World Day Against Trafficking in Persons.
This year’s theme, “Trapped Behind the Scam,” shines a light on a growing and often hidden form of human trafficking; people being deceived, coerced and forced into online scam operations, including financial fraud and fake romance schemes.
But trafficking is much bigger than one form of exploitation. Human trafficking is the exploitation of people for profit. It can happen in brothels, factories, homes, online spaces and communities. And while the methods may look different, the goal is the same: to take away someone’s freedom and profit from their vulnerability.
At Offspring, we see the devastating impact of trafficking through the young women and girls we work alongside in Kolkata.
Many of the girls who come to us were vulnerable long before they were trafficked. Poverty. Lack of education. Family breakdown. Limited opportunities. These circumstances can create openings for traffickers to manipulate, deceive and exploit.
That’s why prevention matters. Education matters. Safe communities matter. And creating real opportunities for girls to build a future of their own matters.
Today, we stop, think & pray for those who are trapped. Those who are still fighting for freedom. And today, we continue our commitment to fight for a world where no one is exploited and trafficked.
Because behind every statistic is a person and every person deserves to be free.
