Central Coast Bush Kids Central Coast Bush Kids (CCBK) is a Nature Play program which encourages families to get children ou It seems children need nature and nature needs children.

Central Coast Bush Kids (CCBK) is a program in response to the concern for the future of our children and nature. Research is showing that there is a connection between the wellbeing of children and the wellbeing of nature. Through spending time in nature as a child, direct contact and consistent time with nature, can lead to care and positive attitudes towards nature as an adult. Spending time in

nature, climbing, making, building, playing and observing, has also shown to build children's resilience, ability to recognise and respond to risks, solve their own problems and develop social skills. When we consider the current time children are spending inside and not outside in self-directed play there is a great concern for both the future of our children's health and that of our environment. CCBK seeks to address these concerns through offering programs that get children outdoors experiencing the wonders of nature in a safe way. CCBK's Educators are experienced in Environmental Education and have been trained in the Forest School principles that are taking Europe and the UK by storm. CCBK recognises that it can be difficult to take children outside and let them have 'free-rein', through our programs we hope to give you the confidence to trust yourself and your child in nature.

In collaboration with Take 3 for the Sea, Dr Royce Willis from Southern Cross University recently conducted a study exploring how reducing waste behaviour is linked to mental well-being.

Our findings show that people who feel more connected to nature tend to see their waste reduction efforts as more meaningful and engage in these activities more frequently. We also found that those who participate regularly in waste reduction activities—like litter clean-ups and recycling—report higher levels of mental well-being.

Interestingly, Take 3 for the Sea supporters stood out across the board. They felt a deeper connection to nature and found greater meaning in their waste reduction efforts compared to the general population.

This research emphasises that waste reduction goes beyond environmental impact—it’s also about personal growth and connection. By participating in activities like recycling, reducing food waste, and joining clean-up events, people contribute to a cleaner environment, can experience a sense of purpose, and potentially improved mental well-being.

Do you find this to be true in your experience?
