🦋 Butterfly Education and Awareness Day 🦋

Today we’re celebrating two of Western Australia’s endangered butterfly species, Jalmenus aridus and Ogyris petrina.

Through a two-year partnership between Northern Star and the Foundation for the WA Museum, WA Museum Research Associate Rod Eastwood is leading research to better understand and protect these rare endemic butterflies.

Last week, Rod visited Northern Star’s Perth headquarters for a Lunch & Learn session, sharing insights into the project and the vital role biodiversity research plays in conservation.

We’re proud to support research that transforms discovery into action, helping safeguard WA’s unique natural heritage for future generations.

Biodiversity in the Fortescue Marsh - Part 2 🪲

A milestone field trip… first in two decades.

In March 2026 the team completed the first intensive field trip in roughly 20 years across Karijini National Park and the Fortescue Marsh. A field team along with traditional owners traversed gorges, spinifex plains and marsh fringes, rediscovering long suspected carabid hotspots and locating the project’s target ground beetles.

Northern Star and the Foundation for the WA Museum have announced a two-year research partnership with the WA Museum to accelerate knowledge and conservation efforts for two endangered WA Butterflies: Jalmenus aridus and Ogyris petrina. 🦋

The collaboration will support targeted research, monitoring and public engagement to inform recovery actions for these threatened species. Led by WA Museum Research Associate Rod Eastwood, the project will combine intensive field surveys, genetic sampling and analysis to map population hotspots, inform population connectivity and uncover new insights into the evolutionary history of both species. Recent surveys by Rod have already produced important discoveries about the distribution and biology of these butterflies, prompting this investment to answer critical conservation questions.✨
