Three years ago, Hamas terrorists invaded Israel, murdering approximately 1,200 people, wounding thousands and abducting 251 men, women and children to Gaza.

Behind every number was an entire life. A family. A future that should never have been taken.

Three years have passed. Some days, it feels like a lifetime. On others, it feels as though we are still inside that morning, waiting for the nightmare to end.

Today, we remember every life stolen, every family torn apart, every survivor carrying the weight of what happened and every community still rebuilding.

We remember not only how those murdered died, but how they lived. We honour those who ran towards danger to save others. And we continue to tell their stories because remembrance is not only something we carry. It is a responsibility.

May the memories of all those murdered on October 7 be a blessing.

This is a video from Paul Hakim of Israel Surf Life Saving, featuring children supported through WIZO’s Safety Net program.

These are children who, together with their mothers, have experienced domestic violence and spent time in shelters. With the support of WIZO, they are now beginning to rebuild their lives and create a safer, more hopeful future.

WIZO’s Safety Net communities provide vital support to mothers and children as they navigate this difficult transition — helping families move forward with safety, stability and dignity.

WIZO Australia is proud to contribute funding to this important work. It is a wonderful reminder that support raised here in Australia can have a very real impact on children and families in Israel.

Seeing these children enjoying time together through Israel Surf Life Saving is a powerful reminder of what rebuilding can look like: connection, confidence, community and simply being able to be children.

There is still so much work to do, but every child deserves the opportunity to feel safe, supported and hopeful about their future.

Ahead of Rosh Hashanah, President Isaac Herzog and First Lady Michal Herzog visited the “Hakol Dvash” apiary in Yesod HaMa’ala for a special gathering with beekeepers from the Galilee. The event highlighted the essential role of bees and pollination in Israeli agriculture, as well as the determination of northern beekeepers who continued caring for their hives throughout the war.

Among those invited were students from the Beekeeping Major at WIZO Nir HaEmek Youth Village, together with Sharon Nir Inbar, Head of the Green Leadership Program. The students recently represented Israel at an international conference for young beekeepers in Ireland.

As President Herzog said during the visit:
“It is moving to see how pollination and life are returning even to places that were burned.”

We are incredibly proud to see our students representing WIZO Nir HaEmek and the next generation of Israeli agriculture. 💛🐝
