On his fourth day in hospital, Pope Leo XIV's doctors say new blood tests and a chest X-ray confirm "the steady improvement in his overall condition.”

The Pope continues with respiratory physiotherapy, and he is carrying out his "normal daily activities entirely independently" as he recovers from surgery on Tuesday.

As night falls, let us lift our hearts in solemn prayer for all who bear the cross of cancer, for those enduring suffering in silence, and for the families who remain faithfully by their side.

In a special way, we entrust our Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV, to the healing mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ. May He grant him renewed strength, restore his health, and sustain him through His unfailing grace.

Through the intercession of St. Peregrine Laziosi, St. Bernadette Soubirous, and St. Padre Pio, may the sick find consolation, the weary find strength, and the suffering find peace in Christ.

Let us unite as one Church in prayer for our Holy Father and all those afflicted by cancer.

Pope Leo XIV approved the election of Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, 69, as the new dean of the College of Cardinals Oct. 8. The 69-year-old pro-prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization succeeds Italian Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, who stepped down from the role at the age of 92.

The dean plays a key role during a conclave when the cardinals come to Rome to elect a new pope. The dean presides over their daily meetings before the conclave, and once inside the Sistine Chapel, he presides over many tasks, such as administering the oath of secrecy. When a candidate achieves a two-thirds majority vote, the dean -- in the name of the entire college -- asks the candidate if he accepts the election and what name he will take.

Amid a loneliness epidemic, recent research shows faith and family are “antidotes to isolation.”

A report published by Institute for Family Studies on Sept. 25 found that churchgoing Catholic couples are happier than other couples. In fact, happiness more than doubled among spouses who attend church compared with their peers.

Among the report’s most notable findings is that despite cultural challenges to faith and a decline in marriage, people who attend church consistently report higher levels of happiness and their marriages are strong.

The report drew on data from the General Social Survey (GSS), CARA data, YouGov, Pew Research, and other sources.

Report co-author Brad Wilcox, senior fellow and director of the Get Married Initiative at the Institute for Family Studies, noted that “churchgoing Catholics and Protestants marry more, have more children, and divorce less than their secular peers.”

“The good news in the report is that the happiest and most s*xually satisfied husbands and wives are churchgoing Catholics,” Wilcox told EWTN News. “For instance, 79% of churchgoing Catholics and 74% of churchgoing Protestants are very happily married, compared to 66% of nonreligious husbands and wives.”

“Among churchgoers, 55% of Catholics and 45% of Protestants report being satisfied with their s*x lives. (i.e., rating one’s s*x life as “excellent” or “very good”), compared to just 45% of nominal Catholics, 35% of nominal Protestants, and 40% of Nones,” Wilcox said.

Also, churchgoers are 39% more likely to be married than their peers, the report found.

“Men and women tethered to the institutions of faith and marriage are more than twice as likely to be very happy today compared to their peers who are not,” read the report, authored by Wilcox along with Grant Bailey, Richard Dell’Isola, and Jane Lankes Smith.

“There’s a ‘faith-family paradox’ where the role of faith, marriage, and family life has shrunk since the 1970s (with Catholic weddings falling by 74% since 1970 to the present),” Wilcox said. “But the believers who remain are more likely to enjoy strong, stable families.”

La Chiesa ricorda oggi Lorenzo Ruiz, laico di origine filippina, assieme ad altri 15 martiri, tutti legati all’Ordine domenicano, uccisi tra il 1633 e il 1637 a Nagasaki, in Giappone. I 16 sono stati canonizzati nel 1987 da Giovanni Paolo II, che li aveva beatificati sei anni prima a Manila.
