Celebrating 7 years of IDKY with our Founder & CEO, Isaiah.

This year marks 7 years of our journey.

It has been a long road to get here, but through the strength of our partnerships, stakeholders, team, and the amazing children and families we support, we have been able to make a tremendous impact and create lasting change — creating a ripple effect that helps break the cycle of intergenerational trauma and disadvantage, and moves us closer to a world where Aboriginal children belong.

There is still a long way to go. But with your support, your donations and by helping raise awareness of the work we do and the challenges our children and families face, we move one step closer every single day.

Thank you for standing with us and supporting us over the last seven years.

We look forward to the next seven years and many more years ahead.

Last week we were invited by SNAICC to attend a parliamentary briefing at Parliament House hosted by the Hon. Linda Burney MP, Minister for Indigenous Australians, focused on Target 12 of Closing the Gap, including the goal of a 45% reduction in the over-representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in out-of-home care by 2031.

We heard from the Hon. Tanya Plibersek MP, Claire Robbs (CEO, Life Without Barriers) and Jaharn Mundy Drazevich, who shared his lived experience in care. It was great to connect with other Aboriginal Community-Controlled Organisations, leaders and allies and hear about the important work happening on the ground to support our children, families and communities.

We are proud to stand with Allies for Children to call for urgent reform and the transition of resources to ACCOs to ensure culturally safe care and connection to culture, community and Country.

There’s still a long way to go, but with your support, awareness and donations, you can help drive our vision forward, to create a world where Aboriginal children feel like they belong.

In light of International Women’s Day this month, we want to celebrate some incredible First Nations women who have paved the way for change - directly and indirectly with us at IDKY.

From advocating for justice and education, to creating opportunities and empowering young people, these women inspire us with their resilience and leadership.

Today is Close the Gap Day - a reminder that significant work is still needed to address the ongoing overrepresentation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in out-of-home care.

Progress in reducing inequality has been limited since 2019, highlighting the urgent need for stronger prevention, family support and culturally safe, community-led care.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander infants continue to be disproportionately represented in out-of-home care.

When young children are removed from family, the impact is immediate and lifelong. Connection to family, culture, language and community is disrupted at the very beginning. This isn’t about individual families failing. It’s about the root causes not being adequately addressed: intergenerational trauma, poverty, housing insecurity and lack of culturally safe support.

We are working to create change and break this cycle. But to do so, we need your help and support, as we work to give every child the same opportunities. Donate via the link in our bio.

In the lead up to Close the Gap Day, we’re highlighting the urgent realities facing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children. Starting off with the disproportionately low rate of reunification.

Reunification is about more than returning home, it’s about connection to culture, community, identity and Country. When children remain separated from their family, the impacts ripple across generations.

It raises urgent questions about the support families are (or aren’t) receiving, the cultural safety of systems designed to protect children, and whether enough is being invested in early intervention and community-led solutions.

Support us to continue delivering Aboriginal-led programs focused on closing the gap and breaking the cycle. Donate via the link in our bio.
