🌱 Pathways in Highland Dancing: Starting Out - The Primary Category 🌱

Every Highland dancer’s journey begins with those very first steps — and the Primary category is designed to gently introduce our youngest dancers to the world of competitions 💃✨

👶 Who is it for?
The Primary category is open to dancers aged 4–6 years. Dancers can compete in this section until they reach their 7th birthday, after which they move into the Beginner category.

Some dancers may choose to move into a higher category before turning seven. If they do, they must then remain in that new category and continue progressing in line with the Pre-Premier registration scheme.

🩰 Events danced in Primary:
• Pas de Basques
• Pas de Basques & High Cuts
• Highland Fling
• Sword Dance

These dances focus on building the foundations of Highland technique, helping young dancers gain confidence, rhythm, and performance experience in a supportive environment 🌟

🏅 A focus on learning and encouragement
At this early stage, the emphasis is on participation and development. Because Primary is designed for dancers at a very basic level of technique, trophies are not awarded — either for individual dances or overall points.

Instead, this category celebrates the joy of dancing, learning new steps, and stepping onto the competition stage for the very first time 💜

✨ Do you remember your first competition as a young dancer? Share your memories with us below! 💜💚

🎉👏 What an incredible run! 👏🎉

A huge congratulations to all performers at the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo as the Brisbane season officially wrapped up over the weekend. Four unforgettable performances brought the power, precision and pride of Scottish culture to Australian audiences, and we couldn’t be more thrilled!

💜💚 We are especially proud of the Australian dancers in the cast, representing our community on such a prestigious international stage and sharing Highland Dancing with the wider public in Brisbane. Your dedication, talent and professionalism truly shone.

As the Tattoo packs up and heads across the Tasman, we wish the entire cast the very best of luck in Auckland this week. Thank you for showcasing Scottish tradition, music and dance on a world-class platform — we’ll be cheering you on every step of the way! 🥁🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Vale - Nancy Kennedy

It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of former ABHDI President, Nancy Kennedy.

Nancy was a long-serving, passionate advocate for Highland Dancing in Australia. Her dedication spanned many decades and included significant administrative contributions, notably as President and Treasurer of the Victorian State Committee of Highland Dancing. Her commitment, leadership, and love for our community have left a lasting legacy.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Nancy’s family, friends, and all who had the privilege of working alongside her. May her memory be a blessing to the Highland Dancing community she cared for so deeply.
