We’re excited to share our event coming up next Wednesday: a Webinar Watch Party for DEA’s After Hours webinar ‘Plastics, Endocrine Disruptors, and Health’ 🎥🌱

In the spirit of Plastic Free July, we’ll be hearing from Dr Mitch Hickson, DEA's Plastic and Waste Pollution Special Interest Group Chair and Dr Kate Wylie, DEA’s Executive Director, about the insidious impacts of plastics and endocrine-disrupting chemicals on human health. A timely discussion on a topic that challenges us to consider the environmental drivers of disease.

On Wednesday 22 July, join us for dinner from 7pm (making rice paper rolls) for a 7:30pm webinar start. Feel free to bring friends and your own snacks!

Today we were fortunate to be joined by A/Prof Louis Irving and Dr Kate Wylie from Doctors for the Environment Australia for a panel discussion at our 2026 University of Melbourne MD Student Conference.

On the topic of 'Climate Change and the Future of Clinical Practice,' we had the opportunity to hear the perspectives of two inspiring healthcare leaders and learn more about what we can do, as future clinicians, to create a healthier and more sustainable future.

Thank you to A/Prof Irving, Dr Wylie, and our medical student organiser Eliza Fergusson for delivering such an engaging and thoughtful session.

Happy ! The 2026 theme is 'Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future.' As the Earth continues to warm and threaten ecosystems and communities worldwide, we look towards nature as a vital part of our climate change response.

Pictured: Winton Wetlands (VIC).

Wetlands capture and store substantial carbon from the atmosphere. Despite their importance, they are rapidly declining worldwide. Protecting and restoring wetlands provides a powerful and cost-effective means of curbing carbon emissions and climate warming.

Congratulations to the PHRC team at the University of Melbourne on the successful launch of the 2025–26 Planetary Health Report Card (PHRC)! This marks Melbourne Medical School's 3rd edition 🎉

The PHRC is a global student-led initiative that evaluates health professional schools on the integration of planetary health in their education, research, and campus activities.

This year, the medical school achieved an overall score of B, placing first among participating schools in Australia. We saw an overall improvement from last year, with higher performance in key areas Curriculum and Research.

A huge thank you to the students and staff who worked on this submission, and to all whose efforts have contributed to advancements in sustainability and planetary health at MMS.

This year's theme for Earth Day is once again 'Our Power, Our Planet.' The focus this year, however, is on power as agency—the power of community engagement and collective action to support systemic change.

Earth Day describes environmental action as 'sustained by daily actions of communities.'

In a clinical context, this extends to students and healthcare professionals. We play an important role in educating patients on climate-related health risks and advocating for sustainable healthcare and emissions reduction.
