It was another day of ‘learning to play and playing to learn’, with mostly perfect weather and a fantastic venue, as 517 students competed in the Riverland Sapsasa Track & Field Carnival at Loxton High School! The students competed hard too, but the sportsmanship was even better than the effort.

This year we had an expanded program:
💪🏽Standalone multiclass events were held for the first time in recent history with 10 students running the 100m in front of a large cheering crowd an absolute highlight.
👟9 year olds also had their own events for the first time, competing in a come and try environment with no ribbons or records. There were great numbers in these events; these students will be rearing to go as 10 year olds next year.

Our winners for the day were:
🏆Loxton Lutheran School - Large School Shield Winners - With a big score of 458 they finished ahead of Waikerie PS, who have been in the top 2 or 3 for the last few years, and Loxton PS, who have won the last 13 large school shields.
🏆Cobdogla - Medium School Winners for the 2nd year in a row with 231 points, 40 more than last year’s tally. Barmera were just 17 points behind.
🏆Ramco PS - Small School Shield Winners for the 4th year in a row with 124 points.
🏆Glossop – Most Improved Shield winners – Glossop did not have any competitors in 2025, so to bring a crew and win this award was a huge effort! St Joseph’s Renmark were 2nd in the improvement tally.

We also had three records on the day. Well done to:
🏅Chloe Golding (Waikerie) – 12F 1500m - Chloe now holds all 3 1500m age group records, her time of 5:43 beating Emy Ahmed’s 2023 mark of 5:54.36.
🏅Zac Liebich (Waikerie) – 12M 1500m - Zac clocked the very impressive time of 5:26.81, beating Mitchell Johnson’s 5:28 from 2021. Zac had to leave straight after to head to a road cycling racing event in Victoria!
🏅Maya Uren (Loxton Lutheran) – 10F Long Jump – Maya has got springs in her legs, jumping 3.55 metres, hitting the sand 11cm ahead of Sasha Hopkins’ record from 2018

Some other notable mentions go to the below students, who all gained the maximum possible 30 points (10 per first placing) in individual events:
🥇🥇🥇Maya Uren (Loxton Lutheran) – 1st in 11F Long Jump, 100m & 200m
🥇🥇🥇Zara Bullock (Loxton) – 1st in 11F 200m, 800m & 1500m
🥇🥇🥇Chloe Golding (Waikerie) – 1st in 11F 1500m, 800m & 200m

There were a number of other students who finished in the top 3 for all their events! All results are available at rss.resultshq.com.au, whilst photos and further information on the day will be posted on the Riverland School Sport page.

A Riverland team will be selected by our athletics panel, with details on training to come in term 2 in the lead up to the state championships on Thursday, September 3 at Adelaide Athletics Stadium.

Many thanks for this event must go out to the following people:
• Loxton High School, led by Sport Coordinator Skye Beauchamp, who along with staff and students did a massive amount of work to get the venue sorted for us, including setting up all equipment needed. This was a double set up this year, as we were not able to back the event on to the high schools’ carnival. They were there packing up at the end of the day too, easing the load on our officials, and most of it was done before our volunteers got a chance to even ask what was next!
• Anne-Marie Riley, who coordinated many aspects of the event, including the scoring & information for officials.
• Christine, Chris & Results HQ, along with Danielle Buzza & Richard Coote at the finish line with stellar help as well from Greg Platt, Greg Platt and a big crew of Loxton High School students
• Berri-Barmera Council, who allowed us to use their picket fence for the event. It made for a perfect barrier between the track and school area, and looked great!. Thanks to Greg Platt for collecting it, and Berri Regional Secondary College for the trailer loan.
• Marty Barber, Carol Morris (marshals) & Mac Grummett (starter). It can be a long day constantly keeping things flowing, but we managed to get every block of track events started on time, finishing the day early enough for everyone to stay for presentations.
• Ellie Gray and her year 12 Loxton High School Sport Studies Class, who were the officials at most field events and did such a professional job. In a bonus this forms a part of their assessment for the subject. Thanks also to Ellie and Skye Beauchamp for roaming around and helping sort any issues or assistance needed at the field events.,
• All of the other officials and helpers! There are too many to mention, and they include parents, school staff members and community volunteers such as Rita Modlinski and Judith Howie (announcers) and Nadine Hennig (recorders/scorers), along with those already mentioned. Without these people an event like today would not be possible.
• Riverland Media for their coverage
• Meditactix, who looked after all of our first aid requirements
• All our sponsors, with special mentions to:
o Nippy’s, who have a long association with this event and had Matthew attend to present awards.
o Occasion Event Management, whose marquees the schools took shelter under during the day! In an extra bit of help, the marquees stayed up for the 2 weeks between the RSSA Sports Day and this carnival, with Occasions only charging the one fee to be split between the two events.
o Berri Hotel, who provided free accommodation for our travelling officials
o Tri State Graphics, who made all the ribbons we gave out and give a discount as part of their sponsorship!
o Little Miss Daisy, who in addition to catering for the huge crowd, provided free food and drink for our officials as part of their sponsorship.
• All of the students, whose enthusiasm and efforts are what the day is all about and the staff for organsing and training them.
• Sorry if anyone has been forgotten, but great work all. Your efforts, knowledge and assistance are greatly appreciated.

🥎⚫🔴Day 2 & 3 wrap ups from coach Nicole Mentha below. Thanks to Nic for all her work with the team; she has been a great mentor for the students, as has assistant Sue Jungfer, who was initially going to coach the girls and still went along to help! Stay tuned for photos and more info on how our 3 girls, who played for Murraylands, went. The wrap ups:

Day 2

Game 4 - Riverland vs Lower South East

Game 4 this morning began with some light rain, but the boys persevered and played a very competitive match against Lower South East. Hadley was outstanding in the field at shortstop, including making an impressive catch while moving back into the outfield. There were solid pitching and catching partnerships, with Nash to Maxton followed by Henry to Lachlan. Jaxon demonstrated strong batting with two hits to the outfield, while Isaac and Kohen both delivered solid hits off the tee to centrefield.

Riverland lost 8-11

Game 5 - Riverland vs Murraylands

The boys followed up with a win against Murraylands, coming out strong with an excellent team effort to secure 5 runs in the first innings. Nash was solid in the field at second base and finished the game pitching. There were strong hits from Logan, Justice, Jaxon, Henry, and Hadley.

Riverland won 8-7

Day 3

Game 6 vs Hills

In game 6, Maxton delivered a two-base hit to left field and made two catches at third base. Jaxon, Justice, Hadley, and Henry each contributed base hits. The boys were strong defensively, holding tight in the field and managing to achieve three outs in three out of the four innings

Riverland lost 4 to 9

Game 7 vs Yorke Peninsula

In game 7, the boys were competitive against Yorke Peninsula, who ultimately won our division. Players were rotated through three to four positions each, demonstrating their versatility. Logan, Maxton, Henry, and Hadley all performed well on the pitching plate, while Isaac, Leighton, Nash, and Justice provided excellent efforts behind home plate. There were single hits from Maxton, Isaac, Henry, Hadley, Kohen, and Jaxon.

Riverland lost 7 to 15

Game 8 vs Murray Mallee

Game 8 saw all the boys' efforts and learning come together as they played an excellent team game. They started strongly, scoring the maximum 5 runs in the first innings while allowing Murray Mallee only one run. From there, the boys consistently added to their total, finishing with 11 runs and restricting Mallee to just 6. The game concluded with their best fielding innings of the week—three up, three down.

Riverland won 11 to 6

Well done boys, fantastic three days of softball, team work and fun!!

🔴⚫🥎Day 1 Boys Softball Wrap From Coach Nicole Mentha

Game 1 - Kangaroo Island vs Riverland

An excellent start to the carnival—three up, three down in our first fielding innings, followed by scoring five runs with the bat. Nash set the tone with a strong performance pitching the first two innings, whilst Justice delivered a superb line drive off the tee to reach second base. Maxton demonstrated outstanding commitment in the outfield with some impressive diving efforts. Overall, it was a fantastic team performance.

Final Score: Riverland won 14-9

Game 2 - Upper South East vs Riverland

The boys showed huge improvement and delivered another impressive performance. Jaxon made consecutive catches in the infield and also secured a three-base hit. Maxton contributed with a three-base hit as well, and Isaac sent another powerful line drive to the outfield. There were also several outstanding plays from Hadley at shortstop, linking up effectively with Justice at first base.

Final Score: Riverland lost 10-17

Game 3 - Riverland vs Barossa and Light

We had a slow start to the game, but the boys came back strong in the second half of the game. Hadley and Lachlan showed resilience from the pitching plate, while Maxton, Nash, and Jaxon were consistent in getting on base. Lachlan and Justice also worked well together in the field to secure some crucial outs.

Final Score: Riverland lost 6-14

🏊🏽‍♀️⚫🔴🥈State Swimming Championship, from team manager Amelia Waters below. Thanks to Amelia and coach Mic Kassebaum for all their work! What a great effort for the team to come 2nd overall! Amelia's wrap up:

A team of 21 students from Years 4, 5 and 6 proudly represented seven Riverland primary schools at the SAPSASA School Swimming Carnival, held at the SA Aquatic Centre in Marion on Monday 23 March.

The team achieved an outstanding result, finishing second overall in Division 3. It was a fantastic day filled with strong team spirit, valuable learning experiences, and great sportsmanship.

We were particularly impressed by the swimmers who showed outstanding team spirit—supporting their teammates in the stands throughout the day, even if they were only competing in one event. Many of these students went on to achieve great success as part of their relay teams, placing first or second.

A sincere thank you to all parents for their efforts in travelling and supporting their children. We also extend our appreciation to those families who volunteered as timekeepers for the Riverland team.
A special thank you to Mic Kassebaum for his efforts in coaching the successful team. His knowledge and advice are always appreciated by the swimmers.

🏉🙌🏽We got a beautiful, still day, if a little humid for the first 120 minutes of football these boys played for the season, for our Riverland Sapsasa Boys Football Carnival at Berri Oval today. It was a great learning experience for our students under some experienced coaches, with a variety of experience and skill levels coming together in great spirits!.

🏆✊🏽Loxton ended up undefeated to take out the title in a dominant performance, scoring 282 points for the day and only conceding 30, but all teams gave their all and encouraged each other right to the end; all 5 teams had at least one tight game for the day. Waikerie finished runners up with just the one loss to Loxton and a points difference of +139. All results can be viewed at https://scheduler.leaguelobster.com/2574139/riverland-sapsasa-football-carnival/2026/

🎖As this carnival also is a selection trial it has an MVP medal, voted on by the umpires on a 3-2-1 basis. The top 4 were:
Equal 3rd - Tyler Elphick (Berri) - 7 votes
2nd place - Bruno Thiele-Butterworth (Loxton) - 8 votes
1st place - Ben Sparrow (Waikerie) - 9 votes
🙏🏽Thanks to Todd & Riverland Premier Sports for donating the MVP medal. Our BRSC Sport & Rec Students (mentioned below) presented Ben with the medal.

Thanks also to:
🙏🏽Dillon, Toby & Nate, from Berri Regional Secondary College, who helped organise the day and coordinated all umpires as part of their Sport & Recreation Studies with Lyn Sweeney. All umpires were also from BRSC.
🙏🏽All school staff who organised their teams so well and coached them with sportsmanship and enthusiasm on the day, as well as parent helpers. A special shout out to:
David Ness (Barmera)
Nick Dillon (SANFL) and Angelo Villanueva (Berri) - a special shoutout to Nick for taking on this role, especially since he has just returned from a roadshow with the AFL Premiership Cup
Leigh Kruger (Loxton)
Paul Hooper (Renmark)
Andrew Sparrow (Waikerie),
Extra shoutout to all other school staff who assisted them.
🙏🏽Berri-Barmera Council & Berri Football Club for allowing us to use their facilities and being so accommodating in the lead up and on the day. A special shout out to Lynton Scott (pictured) for again marking the lines for us yesterday! See a photo of Scotty receiving his presents from Jane, via sponsors Riverland Fitness Centre & Loxton Bakehouse!
🙏🏽 Jane Woolston, who did too many jobs to mention to get the day organised, including stocking up the snacks and drinks for our officials!
🙏🏽Little Miss Daisy, who catered and also gave back a sponsorship to Riverland School Sport, by way of providing food and drink for our student officials.

Did we catch you thinking about Riverland Sapsasa Softball trials? We are after more year 5/6 girls to enable us to field a team for the state carnival on March 25-27.

Please swing by your school coordinator to grab a note with further details. We are looking for more registrations by this Friday to confirm whether we can go ahead with the team.

🏊🏽‍♂️☀️ While the forecast called for a late storm, the real action arrived early at the Renmark Pool! Our talented Riverland students put on a fantastic display of skill and sportsmanship at yesterday's Riverland Sapsasa Swimming Carnival. Well done to everyone who dived into the action! ! Highlights:

💪🏽🏊🏽‍♀️117 students from 13 schools swam up to 7 races on the day.
🤝🏽Our students were well mannered and great sports. There were many positive comments on this front, and it was noted that students were celebrated by their peers for good times, and consoled when they felt they hadn't done as well as they had hoped.
🎉Our newly added 9 year old 'come and try' races were great value, with big smiles on the students faces, and big cheers from the crowd (especially the timekeepers) as they touched the wall. With no ribbons or records for these races it was a great introduction ahead of them having a crack at the 10 year old races next year!
⏱PBs went down left right and centre, including many swimmers who were competing for the first time and had smiles on their faces from the rush and experience of touching that wall!
⏱🥇 5 records went down, all to the one family. Firstly, 10 year old Molly Hooper (St Joseph's Renmark) broke Halina Kudra's 50m freestyle record from 2015! Not to be outdone, older sister Annie broke the 11 year old 50m records for freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly! In a nice touch, Ella Rothe (ex OLOR student who was timekeeping for Monash on the day) was on hand to present Annie with the freestyle record ribbon, as the record broken was Ella's from 2021. Riverland Sapsasa coach Mic Kassebaum, who has also worked with both the girls presented the other ribbons, including for his daughter Ella's previous records in freestyle and breaststroke. Full details of the records pictured!

There were a variety of winners and high performers from all schools throughout the day, but our relay shield winners were:
🏆St Joseph's Renmark again won the Uzzell Shield (mixed open medley relay), with a great swim to beat Loxton Lutheran and Loxton Primary's times! The Uzzell Shield was the brainchild of former convenor Beth Hueppauff and added in 2019. The shield honours Neil & Liz Uzzell. Neil was a Riverland Sapsasa coach, Loxton Swim Club life member, and involved in everything in swimming along with his wife Liz. He was renowned for remembering all the times off by heart. Liz was giving out ribbons on the day and on hand to present the shield.

🏆St Joseph's Renmark showed what a strong group of swimmers they have, by also taking out the Appleton Shield for the 4x50m relay. Again Loxton Lutheran & Loxton PS came in 2nd and 3rd. The shield was donated in 1934 by Mr A.W Appleton of Yandilla, in memory E.E Barber, Scout Master & Swim coach at Renmark. Past convenor Beth Huepauff, also volunteering as a marshal on the day, presented this shield and the students spoke very well, thanking school and Riverland organisers, as well as the other teams.

💪🏽Still on the relays, we must commend the students who put their hands up to fill slots for their relay teams, even if they were 10 year olds or not completely comfortable with the stroke they were swimming. A couple of schools who were late entries and didn't finish at the pointy end were as loud and happy as any team when they touched the wall at the end of the 200m. Your teams may not have won the shield, but these can do have a go attitudes will take you a long way in life!

🏊🏽‍♂️Overall, it was as great day Well done to all students, who were great sports while 'learning to play and playing to learn'!

🥇🥈🥉All results can be viewed at https://rss.resultshq.com.au/
📨The Riverland team will be announced through schools in the coming days. The team will train under coach Michael Kassebaum (who was also stroke judging all day at the carnival) in the lead up to the state championship on Monday, March 23.

An extra shout out to Mic, he recently had the RSSA Overall Winning Shield named after him, due to his 40 years of excellent dedication to swimming at school and club level in the Riverland. Congratulations Mic, we are excited to have you coaching our students again.

Thanks to the many people who made today's event a success, including:
👏🏽all of our school staff
👏🏽Renmark Swim Club, who allowed us to use any of their equipment required, including their clubrooms, blocks and a big pile of marquees. An extra thanks to Matt Jarvis, who not only assisted us with set up and pack up, but was also a marshal on thhe day!
👏🏽Sonia & Belgravia, who run the venue and are always accommodating and easy to deal with
👏🏽Our crew of Rivergum Christian College secondary students, organised by Christan, who provided 9 students as timekeepers and runners. This takes the burden off schools having to provide extra officials.
👏🏽Christine, who ran the Results HQ system at the finish line for this event, with help from Chris back at HQ HQ. It should be mentioned that this was the 3rd time Christine has joined us on her birthday for this carnival, so we had some cake for once the pack up was completed.
👏🏽Anne-Marie Riley and Jane Woolston, who did a lot of work in the lead up and on the day in various aspects of event organisation and running!
👏🏽All our officials, many of whom are volunteers who put in to many events! Some of our officials were Judith Howie, Cindy Kassebaum (announcers), Mick Kassebaum (stroke judge), Amity Kassebaum (starter), Matt Jarvis, Beth Hueppauff (marshals), Amelia Waters (place judge), Rita Modlinski (chief timekeeper) & Liz Pendle. This event would not be financially or logistiically possible without volunteers! We also need to give special mentions to:
🙏🏽🙏🏽those who put their hand up to time keep for schools
🙏🏽🙏🏽Liz Uzzell, who was one of those volunteers helping all day getting ribbons to the correct students, then also presented the Uzzell and Appleton Shields.
☕Little Miss Daisy, who provided food and drink for our officials as part of their sponsorship, a big deal across all events. The iced coffees were particularly popular!

Sorry if we have forgotten anyone there, but your efforts are appreciated and we look forward to seeing you all at the next event!
