Melinda Fletcher - Aterre

Mel is the founder of Aterre .arch , a future-focused residential architecture practice based in Newtown, Sydney. Aterre fosters engaged, participatory design thinking with their clients, helping them to create space for life - spaces that are enduring and delightful. Mel’s interest in architecture began through wood-working and furniture restoration and extended through professional training to encompass ways of living better, finding our way to smaller, more sustainable and joyful housing. Mel enjoys applying creativity to business and the culture of practice, creating space for life not only for clients but also for the Aterre team in what can otherwise be a very demanding profession.

Arash Engineer - Smart Design Studio

Arash is a registered architect, winner of the Ethel M Chettle Prize in architecture, and is currently an associate at Smart Design Studio .design.studio Arash is passionate about the integration of architecture and interiors currently working across several scales and typologies.

Most recently he has been collaborating-on and leading education, residential and adaptive re-use projects. Having worked for the last ten years within a diverse range of practices has instilled a passion for the Sydney architecture industry leading to positions on the Emerging Architects and Graduate Network (EmAGN) and his appointment to the Practice of Architecture Committee at the Australian Institute of Architects.

Arash’s design work focuses on the human experience. He is passionate about creating spaces that are joyful and rewarding for people to visit, live, and work.

Charlotte Wilson - SJB

Charlotte has more than 15 years of experience in interior design spanning high-end residential, hospitality and commercial sectors in both Australia and the UK. She specialises in bespoke design and understands the importance of creating sustainable, timeless places that continue to spark joy for years after completion.

Charlotte has a unique understanding of the end user, examining how they will engage and connect with the spaces she creates. Since graduating with an MA in Architecture from London’s Royal College of Art, Charlotte has focused on interior design while maintaining a strong passion for designing with an understanding for both interior and architectural disciplines to achieve holistic, narrative driven projects.

Hosted by our WA Chapter Gender Equity Taskforce (GET), we welcome Candice Knight – People and Culture Business Partner (Hassell), Kellie McGivern – Design Manager (Hesperia) and Seán McGivern – Director (KHA Studio) to discuss the topic ‘Empowering Parenthood’ with a focus on sharing the load between primary and secondary caregiver, as well as employer and employee.

Join us for November’s social catch-up at Tumbalong Park!

This month's social catchup will be held in conjunction with Archibubs and it will be our last morning catchup of the year! We will be meeting along the benches infront of the water playground.

Archibubs is an informal catch-up for parents and parents-to-be within the architectural profession. The purpose is to create new connections and a support network to our peers at this important time in their lives and careers. We hope that by getting together, we can spark more open conversations about the reality of having children, what workplace support is available to us, and how we can continue to navigate our careers.

This event is not limited to parents only. We strongly encourage people from all background to attend. Bring your friends, partners or pets along and enjoy a Saturday morning filled with pastries and coffees!

Kristian Kaufmehl - Studio Kaaki

Kristian is a Director of Studio KaaKi a Sydney and Regional NSW based firm. Kristian has a layered design experience in both Industrial Design and Architecture. He has experience across many scales and typologies of architecture. Most notably being a lead on the Frank Gehry designed Dr. Chau Chak Wing UTS Faculty of Business. He has worked on several award winning Mixed-use Multi Residential Precincts, Houses, Childcare Centres and Resorts. This breadth of experience gives good insights into the profession which he is happy to share.

Sandra Furtado - Furtado Sullivan

Sandra is the co-founder of Furtado Sullivan , an architecture studio based in Sydney. Since its inception in 2018, the studio is committed to improving the world we live in through thoughtful, environmentally sensitive, timeless design. The studio’s work is ambitious in scale and aspirational in its nature, aiming to push creative boundaries and making a positive impact in the industry.

Born and educated in Portugal, Sandra lived and worked in Italy, The Netherlands, Cape Verde and China before settling in Australia. Here, she has been intrinsically involved in notable large-scale projects working for and in collaboration with known international practices including Goncalo Byrne Architects, RSHP, Kengo Kuma and Associates studio in Japan and David Chipperfield Architects in the UK. Since founding her studio, she has been working on several mixed-use precincts in Australia, championing environmental and systems thinking in her design approach. She participates regularly on industry events as a speaker, raising awareness around the practice of architecture and resilient design’

Joshua Robson - Populous

Josh is an architect and the Studio Lead of Populous' Sydney office . His interest in sustainable outcomes is evident in practice and through his involvement with the Australian Architects Declare movement. He advocates for sustainable outcomes in the often challenging context of large infrastructure projects. Some of Josh's notable works include the Sydney International Convention Centre, Bankwest Stadium in Parramatta, Kai Tak International Sports Park in Hong Kong, and Te Kaha Arena in Christchurch, currently under construction.

EmAGN NSW presents our second mental health and wellbeing event, Building Resilience!

Mental wellbeing in the architectural profession and its impact is more important than ever. Minimal support, long hours and undervaluing of architecture in the wider community are all long standing challenges that can put enormous strain on a workplace culture.

We will begin the event with a introduction of our panelists (to be announced shortly!) and then breaking up into smaller informal groups for productive discussions about your mental health. The event will be held at Wardle's studio!
