A heartfelt thank you to the Brisbane Christadelphian Ecclesia for their ongoing generosity in donating toiletry items for our personal care packages.

These essential items help us provide practical support to individuals and families facing difficult circumstances, bringing comfort, dignity, and care when it’s needed most.

If you’d like to contribute, we’d love your support. To learn more about donating and see the items currently needed, visit: https://www.micahprojects.org.au/support-us/donate

This week’s Family Inclusion Network (FIN) session brought parents with lived experience and their allies together to share experiences, ideas, and insights on strengthening support for families.

As part of FIN’s Global Day of Parents celebration, we reflected on an important question: why is it vital for parents to advocate for change themselves?

Lived experience offers insights that can’t be replicated or replaced, and it plays a critical role in shaping more responsive and effective services.

FIN South East Queensland continues to demonstrate the power of genuine partnership between parents, practitioners, government, and community partners to improve policy and practice across the child protection system.

Thank you to Patrick Cobbo, Department to Families, Seniors, Disability Services and Child Safety Director-General Belinda Drew, every parent, ally, practitioner, and partner who listened to understand, contributed their voice, experience, and expertise to this important work.

For more than 30 years, Micah Projects has worked alongside people with lived experience of family support and child protection systems. Their voices continue to be at the heart of our advocacy, challenge intergenerational disadvantage, and drive systemic change.

Together, we’re building a stronger family inclusion movement.

We continue to see the same common truth through all our services: when housing, health and support come together, people stabilise faster and avoid preventable crises.
🩵Homelessness is worsening. The pressures on our housing system are far too great.
🩵Families and children are being pushed into homelessness at increasing rates.
🩵Every night, hundreds of people in Brisbane are searching for somewhere safe to sleep.
🩵Last year, we brokered more than 78,000 nights of crisis accommodation
🩵More than 1,400 families came to us for support with housing and safety.
🩵Our outreach health teams met 900 people last year in parks, cars, tents and unstable housing.
🩵87% of people experiencing homelessness have a serious health condition.

This is why Housing First underpins our work. Read how we’re moving forward > https://www.micahprojects.org.au/resources/resources/strategic-plans/strategic-roadmap-2024

Over 30 years, we’ve spent time listening, learning and trying new ways of working alongside people navigating complex systems.
Here’s what we’re seeing:
🚩People are navigating systems that weren’t designed with them in mind
🚩These systems are often tricky, overlapping and hard to understand
🚩Lived experience shows us where change is needed — and where hope sits.
The challenges are real — and so is our resolve to create lasting solutions.

Today we recognise Mabo Day and honour the remarkable legacy of Eddie Koiki Mabo, a proud Mer Island man.

On 3 June 1992, the High Court of Australia handed down the landmark Mabo decision, overturning the legal fiction of terra nullius and recognising the enduring connection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to their traditional lands.

More than 30 years on, we continue to reflect on the significance of this historic moment and the ongoing journey towards recognition, respect, and reconciliation.

We pay our respects to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and acknowledge their continuing connection to Country, culture, and community.

Today, on the Global Day of Parents, we celebrate the vital role parents play in shaping our families, communities, and future generations. This year’s theme, “Together for Parents,” reminds us of the importance of supporting, empowering, and standing alongside parents.

For more than 30 years, we’ve worked alongside people with lived experience of child protection and family support systems. Their voices are central to the change we work for every day.

The Family Inclusion Network (FIN) South East Queensland, an initiative of Micah Projects, brings parents with lived experience together with government and community partners to improve the child protection system.

We will continue working together to build fairness, dignity and inclusion for all families.

Congratulations to Iroda on completing her traineeship at Hope Street Café, our social enterprise café. During her time in the program, Iroda built valuable hospitality skills, gained confidence, and enjoyed connecting with the local community.

Each year, our traineeship program supports people experiencing social or economic barriers to employment. Through the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative, funded by the Department of Small Business and Training, participants are welcomed into a supportive learning environment where they can develop practical skills and open doors to future opportunities.

🫶🏽 We believe everyone deserves to learn, belong, and thrive. By creating inclusive spaces that foster connection and skill-building, we’re breaking down barriers and supporting people on their pathway to meaningful employment.

📢 A big shout out to the Queensland Homelessness Conference this week - an important space for conversations focused on prevention, systems change, and measuring meaningful outcomes, not just activities.

🎯We’re proud of Micah Projects’ Paulina, Alison and Jade for sharing insights on how collaborative, flexible health engagement and safer pathways for women escaping violence can create real and lasting change - something we see every day in our work at Micah Projects.

A strong theme throughout the conference was the need to move beyond crisis response toward prevention and sustainable systems reform.

There were also powerful discussions about the impacts of fragmented systems, the importance of connection to country, safety and belonging, and the need for collaboration grounded in dignity, equity and trust.

👉🏽 One message stood out above all others: trust remains the cornerstone of meaningful work with individuals, communities, partners and collaborators.
Thank you to everyone involved in these important conversations and the shared commitment to creating lasting change. 💙

This National Reconciliation Week, we are ALL IN in to take action and make change. These commitments guide how we show up with community every day.

We will keep:
• elevating voices of experience
• sharing insights with partners
• honouring truth‑telling in our work
• remembering that we all have different experiences
• treating everyone with dignity and respect
• advocating for inclusion, justice, equity and lasting change

Real change happens when we work together. Over the past 30 years, we’ve learned that listening is where real collaboration begins. Together with our partners, we’ve made an impact, and there’s more to do.

Hear from Micah Projects Acting CEO Bridget Kinch about the housing challenges facing people escaping domestic violence.

With affordable housing in short supply and living costs continuing to rise, many victim-survivors - especially families with children - are being left with few safe and sustainable options.

Read about why long-term housing support is urgently needed>

As Brisbane's rental market hits record high prices and historic low vacancy rates, advocates are warning some domestic violence victims are having to choose between staying in an unsafe home and facing homelessness.
