OzFisher of the Year nominations are streaming in for 2026, but we wanted to look back and give a shout-out to some legends who claimed the title in previous years. 👑

It's OzFishers like these that make fish habitat restoration possible, from the fresh to the salt, inland or coastal, right across Australia. We all offer unique skills and strengths, but share a common goal—better habitat, better fishing.

Know someone else who deserves to join our hall of fame? Nominate them before 13th May at https://ozfish.org.au/ozfisher-of-the-year/

🌿 Who loves seagrass as much as we do? This guy! 🐅

This is a Tiger Calamari, and is one of many squid species we love to catch across northern Australia. But do you know why we often find squid in and around seagrass meadows?

For starters, the females attach their eggs to seagrass leaves, which act as a nursery. And like a tiger in the jungle, seagrass provides camouflage from predators and perfect hunting grounds for feeding.

But squid aren't alone—we're working on seagrass projects right around Australia that support other recreational fishing species, including snapper, whiting, luderick and more.

Learn more about these projects and why seagrass is great for fish AND fishers at https://ozfish.org.au/programs/seagrass-restoration/

🎣 Rec fishers have just pulled carp #100 out of the Murray–Darling as part of the Basin Carp Muster fishing comp—but there's plenty more to catch with monthly prizes on offer!

A sizeable 80cm carp was caught by Jason Walker on the Wakool River. We’ve also had half a dozen big carp from Chao Li in the Mildura region, all measuring over 70cms, as well as 33 entries from Gavin Pay, who is leading the overall most carp caught.

Carp are non-native to Australia and compete with native fish, while their feeding behaviour destroys aquatic vegetation and muddies water clarity.

So now is the perfect time to grab your rods, get the kids involved, and help clear the way for our native fish 🐟

Participating is easy:

1. Catch a carp in the basin.
2. Measure it.
3. Snap a photo on a brag mat or next to a measuring tape.
4. Submit your entry on the OzFish website.

Read more and get involved over at https://ozfish.org.au/article/100-entries-basin-carp-muster/

Darwin will have one of the lowest tides of the year today (~0.2m at 2:10PM). There will be another very low tide on Saturday (~0.4m at 2:46PM). The super low water conditions are a great opportunity to look out over the coast and see first-hand what the underwater structure and habitats look like at some of your favourite land-based fishing spots. It's also a perfect time to scout around for snagged fishing gear (like hooks, sinkers, lures and lines) and to clean up your fishing spots to help our local environment and wildlife.

Report injured wildlife to Wildcare Inc NT : +61 408 885 341

And a reminder if you're a fisher and want to get involved in regular stewardship or clean-up activities, be sure to follow us, check out Unlimited, OzFish Unlimited - Darwin Chapter , or join other fishers in the MasterBait - Blue Hearts monthly coastal clean ups around Darwin.
