Grandpa has a way of telling me exactly what he needs. ❤️🦘
This is a little part of caring for Grandpa that I’ve never really shared before.
At his age, Grandpa requires pretty much round-the-clock geriatric care, and keeping him properly hydrated is an important part of that. He can become dehydrated if I don’t stay on top of it, so throughout the day I’m constantly checking on him and offering him an oral rehydration fluid containing electrolytes when he needs it.
Grandpa always has fresh water available, and I do see him drinking from his water bowl. But these days that isn’t always enough to keep him properly hydrated, so the extra support has become part of caring for him as he’s grown older.
What I find fascinating is that he comes looking for me. He’ll come up to the kitchen cupboard where he knows I keep everything, and when I offer it to him, he makes it very clear whether he wants it or not.
Some days he’ll only want a little; other days he’ll come back for more. When he wants it, he eagerly takes the teat and drinks away — occasionally stopping to lick every little drop he’s managed to spill over himself. 😂
But when he’s had enough, that’s it. He simply turns his head away and won’t take the teat.
After caring for Grandpa for so long, I’ve learnt to follow his cues. His needs can change from day to day, and caring for an old boy like him means watching him closely and being there whenever he tells me he needs a little extra help. ❤️
