📢 EXCITING NEWS 📢

Over the last 17 years, Fly by Night's founder Tamsyn Hogarth has rescued bats from almost every scenario imaginable. She's faced cruelty cases, sweltered through heat events, raised countless pups and gone toe-to-toe with every level of government to get them properly protected.

Now, that work has earned her a nomination as a finalist for the 2026 Victorian Volunteering Awards.

Tamsyn's been shortlisted for a 'Volunteer Impact Award', a category recognising volunteers whose work has driven real, demonstrable change for a community, cause or organisation in Victoria. We're SO proud to see wildlife represented among this year's finalists, through her work.

Those who work closely with Tamsyn know there's rarely a day that goes by without her helping bats, or the people who care for them. She's a hands-on rescuer and carer, and a tireless advocate, whether that's pushing for stronger protections for flying foxes, or simply reminding governments that existing protections need to properly be enforced. That work has made her one of the country's key government and not-for-profit stakeholders for flying foxes.

We know she'd rather be at home looking after bats than standing in a spotlight, but we're dragging her to the ceremony this Thursday, so she can be as proud of this as we all are.

Thank you for everything you do, Tam. And thank you to everyone in the community who nominated her. 😘 💕 🦇

Is your fruit tree netting safe for wildlife?

You can now head down to Monash Recycling and Waste Centre to swap your unsafe netting for a new safer wildlife-friendly alternative at no cost.

Choose from replacement netting (2.8m x 2.8m) or 10 fruit protection bags.

TIP: your netting is unsafe if it has a mesh size greater than 5mm x 5mm at full stretch. If you can fit a finger through the holes, it's not for wildlife and it's illegal to use.

Your surrendered netting will be recycled, helping to reduce waste and protect local wildlife from harmful entanglement.

Alphington, what a turnout!

Over 100 people joined us across two training days in Alphington!

It was fantastic to see so many people keen to learn more about flying fox and microbat rescue.

The growing interest in our local bats has been incredible and it’s wonderful to meet so many people who want to be better prepared to help when the need arises.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us across both days, and to the volunteers and trainers who helped make the sessions happen.

📸 Here are a few moments from our Alphington training days!

All of our remaining 2026 training sessions are now booked out, but if you’d like to be notified when training opportunities become available next year, make sure you register your Expression of Interest (EOI) here https://forms.gle/pTBijfEGKn6VNdps7

We're excited to be helping make local backyards safer for native wildlife!

Yarra Ranges Council is participating in the Net Swap Program, giving residents the opportunity to swap illegal fruit netting that can harm native animals for a safer alternative.

In Victoria, netting on household fruit trees must have a mesh size of less than 5mm x 5mm at full stretch.

Larger mesh sizes can entangle and injure birds, bats and other native animals.
Drop off your illegal fruit tree/vegetable garden netting and receive a free 2.4m net in return. Conditions apply.

You must register to attend this event - https://tinyurl.com/2j7sa47y

The Net Swap Program is delivered by the Regulator in partnership with participating Victorian councils.
