If you are interested in using your voice and privilege for good, and want to further the cause of human rights at UTS, we strongly encourage you to apply. It is also the perfect opportunity to gain valuable experience and skills.
There is a role to suit everyone!

In light of all the protests and the loss of precious lives of our Iranian brothers and sisters, we recognise that we must amplify their voices as they’re risking their lives on the streets of Iran, fighting for their fundamental rights; Freedom of choice. Freedom of voice.

We invite you to join us this Saturday to stand in solidarity with them and condemn the Government’s heinous crime against humanity. We hope to see you there .

This is what climate injustice looks like. One-third of a country that contributes less than 1% of the global greenhouse gas emissions is now under water.

In light of the recent, unprecedented and catastrophic flooding in Pakistan, it is a humanitarian need for us to contribute and help those as much as we can. The disastrous floods have destroyed food supplies and wiped out farm land.

PAKSOCS from Sydney, USYD Muslims in Health society, Pakistan Youth Council of Australia, UTS Students for Humanity and UNSW MSA have decided to collaborate and start a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for those affected by the recent flooding in Pakistan through Human Appeal.

Pakistan has declared a NATIONAL Emergency. The United Nations and worldwide countries have begun humanitarian efforts. Let's play our role to help those in need by donating as much as possible, and sharing with those around us to maximise our impact.

Here are the current statistics regarding the floods:

Deaths:
At least 1,100 people including 380 children have unfortunately perished

Displaced:
Approximately 364,000 people and counting

People affected:
More than 50 million

Damaged area:
More than 1/3 of Pakistan

Damage costs:
At least USD 10 Billion

These numbers are rising daily and have no end in sight if proper action is not taken.

The aim of this fundraiser is to give these people hope that things will come back together and to provide them with the necessary resources they need to survive and build a new life.

Kindly donate what you can. Even a dollar goes a long way.

Social Justice Icon of the Week ✊🏽

Angela Yvonne Davis (born in 1944) is an American political activist, philosopher, academic, scholar, and author. She is a professor at the University of California. A feminist and a Marxist, Davis was a longtime member of the Communist Party USA (CPUSA) and is a founding member of the Committees of Correspondence for Democracy and Socialism (CCDS). She is the author of over ten books on class, gender, race, and the US prison system. She is a social justice icon and offers activists such as oursleves endless inspiration and lessons we hope to carry forward with us!!

📚Revolutionary Reads Book Review 📚

The Shock Doctrine is one of those books that forever changes the way you perceive the world and politics. Riddled with global case studies from Russia to Iraq the book utilises investigative Journalism to expose the alarming connections between capitalism and colonialism till this very day.

Naomi Klein provides a consistant criticism of the Freedman neoliberal ideology and the “Shock and Awe” stratagem examining the extent to which they have seeped into our global economic and political structures.

Klein leaves us with a daunting reminder that there will never be peace so long as war and national disasters can be commodified.

We throughly enjoyed reading and learning from this book. If you are interested in politics, economics, capitalism and human rights then this is the book for you.

It was a pleasure listening to UTS professor Christina Ho deconstruct the history of harmony day, multiculturalism in Australia and acknowledging diversity on campus.

This week’s social justice icon is non other than Martin Luther King Junior! ⭐️

Born in 1929 Atlanta, 🇺🇸, King was an African American Baptist minister whose notions about race consciousness in White America led him to become one of the most notable spokesmen and leaders during the American Civil Rights movement in the 1950s.

His contributions to the movement are highlighted in speeches like “I have a Dream” and further historical stances like the Selma to Montgomery marches in 1965 that revolutionised the way the world thought about race relations and “non-violent” resistance.

In 1968, the world witnessed the assasination of King in Tennessee. His vigour for social justice is still felt today and his principles embedded in many ideologies.

For our movie lovers who would love to learn more we recommend watching “Selma” for a snapshot of this legendary figure in action. 🎬🎞

📣 SFH QuickFact of the week

Statelessness is a forgotten human rights crisis that must be addressed internationally and within Australia, as the current law remains underdeveloped and stagnant in this area. More advocacy needs to happen on a societal level and specifically on a governmental level regarding this crisis!!
