National Sorry Day 26 May 2026, From Sorry to Action

Each year, 26 May marks National Sorry Day, acknowledging the Stolen Generations, when Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children were forcibly removed from their families between the mid-1800s and 1970s, and the tabling of the Bringing them home report in 1997.

National Sorry Day in 2026 marks the 29th anniversary of the report. This year’s national theme, From Sorry to Action recognises the leadership, accountability and urgency required to deliver real change within survivors’ lifetimes.

National Sorry Day is a day to acknowledge the strength of Stolen Generations Survivors and reflect on how we can all play a part in the healing process for our people and nation. While this date carries great significance for the Stolen Generations and other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, it is also commemorated by Australians right around the country.
