Onwards & Upwards

Onwards & Upwards Non-profit group focused on supporting families of inmates and filling the gaps in support for individuals post release.

OAUNQ offers care packs, information, education, resume and letter assistance and referrals. Culture
Culture is the foundation of unity and understanding. We value the rich heritage of Indigenous Australians, recognizing their deep connection to the land and the wisdom of their traditions. Equally, we celebrate the diverse cultures that shape modern Australia, understanding that every individual b

rings unique experiences and perspectives. By fostering mutual respect and embracing this diversity, we create an environment where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued. Culture is not just about heritage but about shared humanity, and we strive to cultivate a space where the past is honored, the present is inclusive, and the future is built on understanding and collaboration. Fellowship
Fellowship is the heartbeat of connection and community. We value relationships built on trust, empathy, and shared experiences. Fellowship is about bringing people together—regardless of their background—to form meaningful bonds that transcend differences. It thrives on mutual support, open dialogue, and collective strength. We believe fellowship empowers individuals and communities to overcome challenges and grow together. It is a reminder that no one stands alone, and through unity, we can inspire hope, nurture resilience, and create a sense of belonging that uplifts us all. Outreach
Outreach is the expression of care through action. We value the power of reaching out to others with compassion, understanding, and purpose. Outreach is about bridging gaps and extending a hand to those who may feel isolated or overlooked. It is driven by a commitment to inclusivity and a belief in the potential of every individual to succeed. By valuing outreach, we affirm that meaningful connections and opportunities can transform lives and strengthen the fabric of our community.

Children Left Behind

Children with an incarcerated parent face challenges most people never see.

They may struggle in school, experience behavioral changes, or feel abandoned even when love is still very much present.

Visiting a parent in prison can be confusing and sometimes traumatic. Not visiting can be just as painful.

What these children need most is stability, honesty, and support, not judgment.

When we talk about incarceration, we have to include the next generation.

The Financial & Emotional Toll

Having a loved one in prison is expensive and exhausting.

Phone calls can cost far more than they should. Travel for visits, sending money for basic necessities, legal fees it adds up quickly. Many families go into debt just to stay connected.

But the emotional cost is even heavier.

Anxiety. Shame. Isolation. Constant worry.

Families often suffer in silence because of stigma. They’re judged for something they didn’t do, and support systems can disappear when they’re needed most.

Supporting families of incarcerated people means addressing both financial injustice and emotional well-being.

The Hidden Sentence

Families don’t commit the crime but they still serve the sentence.

When someone goes to prison, the punishment doesn’t stop at the prison gates. Parents lose children. Children grow up without guidance. Partners carry emotional and financial burdens alone.

Birthdays, holidays, and everyday moments are shaped by absence. Phone calls are limited, visits are controlled, and connection becomes something you have to fight for.

Behind every incarcerated person is a family learning to cope with loss, stigma, and a system that rarely considers them.

Mass incarceration isn’t just a failing justice issue, it’s a family welfare issue.
