During a routine search of the local colony, one of our carers discovered a Little Red Flying Fox mum on the ground. Sadly, she had suffered a serious head injury and passed away shortly after being found.

On closer inspection, the carer noticed mum appeared to have โ€œ3 legsโ€ โ€” a sure sign there was a baby on board. Thankfully, despite her injuries, mum had been doing a wonderful job caring for her little one and keeping him warm until help arrived.

It is currently birthing season for the Little Reds, and this tiny boy is now safely in care. In keeping with our native plant theme for this yearโ€™s babies, he has been named Grevillea pteridifolia โ€” or simply โ€œGrevilleaโ€ for short. ๐ŸŒฟ

Remember, if you see a bat alone during the day, it needs help โ€” but please do not touch it. Flying foxes should only be handled by vaccinated and trained carers.

Please call NQ Wildlife on 0414 717 374 and one of our trained carers will attend as soon as possible. ๐Ÿพ

A beautiful short-necked turtle recently came into care after being struck by a car by a member of the public. The turtle was taken to Tropical Vets, where the shell damage was carefully repaired.

The turtle then spent 4 days in care recovering, happily feasting on raw prawns while being closely monitored. Over the course of rehabilitation, water levels in the tank were gradually increased, and by day four the turtle was confidently swimming and diving again โ€” a wonderful sign of recovery.

After making excellent progress, the turtle was successfully released back into the wild on Bosworths Road. ๐Ÿ’š

A huge thank you to the member of the public who stopped to help and everyone involved in giving this little survivor a second chance.

Many people mistake native brown frogs for invasive cane toads, but telling the difference is really importantโ€”especially here in North Queensland, where we have quite a few native brown frog species. Native frogs play a vital role in controlling insects and maintaining a healthy ecosystem, while cane toads are toxic and harmful to wildlife.

One of the easiest ways to avoid confusion is to make sure you know exactly what a cane toad looks likeโ€”check out the description on the photo for key features to look for.

Quick tips:
โ€ข Cane toads have dry, warty skin and large poison glands behind their eyes.
โ€ข Native brown frogs usually have smooth, moist skin and no obvious glands.

If youโ€™re ever unsure, donโ€™t touchโ€”take a photo and contact NQ Wildlife for advice. Protecting our native frogs starts with knowing whatโ€™s what! ๐Ÿ’›

While out spotlighting one evening, one of our carers noticed an unwell koala high in a tree, estimated to be around 10 metres up. A rescue from that height can be incredibly difficult, so the team returned the following day with rescue equipment hoping to relocate her.

After searching the area and beginning to fear she had moved on, the carers suddenly spotted her curled up quietly on the ground waiting to be rescued โ€” an incredibly lucky turn of events.

As rescuers moved in, the koala made one last dash back toward a nearby tree, but with quick teamwork and calm handling she was safely secured and placed into a rescue basket.

Thankfully, what could have become a very difficult high-tree rescue ended smoothly, and the koala was promptly transported to the Magnetic Island Koala Hospital for assessment and care.

Thank you to our dedicated carers who spend countless hours monitoring and helping our wildlife, often long after most people are asleep. ๐Ÿพ

A few days ago, we received a report of an ibis with an arrow shot through its body.

Not injured by accident. Not caught in fencing. ๐’๐ก๐จ๐ญ.

The bird was still alive. Still trying to survive. Still walking, feeding and flying with an

Why anyone would look at a living animal and decide to use it for target practice is beyond us.

Every wildlife rescuer knows the feeling of receiving a call like this. And the reality is, this is ๐ง๐จ๐ญ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐Ÿ๐ข๐ซ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐ญ๐ข๐ฆ๐ž we have responded to wildlife that has been deliberately shot with bows and arrows or fi****ms. Only a month ago, another bird was X-rayed and found to have a bullet or pellets in its body. It is something we should never have to deal with, yet here we are again.

Many people may have been keeping an eye out for this ibis after its story was shared widely across social media.

The biggest challenge with this rescue was that, despite having an arrow through its body, the bird was still flying remarkably well. Multiple rescue attempts were made over several days, but like many injured birds, it was understandably wary of people and difficult to approach.

Eventually a rescuer was able to net the ibis. During the capture, the arrow became snagged in the net and came away, suggesting it may not have been embedded as deeply as first feared. However, the bird immediately flew off before a full assessment could be carried out.

While we're encouraged that the ibis was still strong enough to fly, we can only hope the wound heals without infection. Unfortunately, we have no way of explaining to a wild bird that we're trying to help.

What we do know is that ๐ญ๐ก๐ข๐ฌ ๐›๐ข๐ซ๐ ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ๐ž๐ซ๐ž๐ because somebody chose to inflict harm on it.

If anyone has information about the person responsible for this attack, we urge you to contact the Queensland Police Service or RSPCA Queensland. Deliberately injuring wildlife is not only abhorrent, it is an offence, and those responsible should be held accountable.

Our rescuers spend countless hours helping injured wildlife, but we are tired of patching up damage that never should have happened in the first place.

A member of the public did exactly the right thing in this situation by calling early (around 6:30am) and not attempting to rescue the bat themselves.

This is an important reminder that while bats are beautiful animals, they become extremely stressed when caught on fences, wire or netting. When frightened, they may struggle harder to escape, which can cause them to become even more tangled.

Please do not attempt to rescue a bat yourself and avoid getting too close. Bats in these situations are scared and may try to flee from people, increasing the risk of further injury.

Untangling bats is complex and should only be done by trained, vaccinated rescuers with the proper equipment.

๐Ÿ‘‰ If you find a bat caught on fencing, wire, or netting:
๐Ÿฆ‡Keep people and pets well away
๐Ÿฆ‡Do not touch or attempt to free the bat
๐Ÿฆ‡Call NQ Wildlife on 0414 717 374 as early as possible
