MINCA Curlew Flat to Nelly Bay walk
Saturday 20th June - Starting 8am at Curlew Flat (between the Forts and Arcadia)

Curlew Flat is the open area on the right hand side of the Horseshoe Bay Road, about 500m before the Forts Car Park, coming from Arcadia.

From Curlew Flat we’ll follow the National Park Track to Nelly Bay, climbing up onto the lower plateau that is the headwaters of Wellbeloved Creek, then roughly following the ridge above Horseshoe Bay to the track head at the end of Mandalay Avenue, Nelly Bay.

It’s a walk for the fit and fittish. It’s a little less than 4 km to Mandalay Avenue so it should take no more than 3 hours.

The walk is typical of the lower granite hills of the island so will be perfect for newcomers, those who would like to know more about our rocky parts, and those who like a walk and a chat.

The first section of the walk, to the Arcadia turnoff, is covered in the Arcadia Coastcare publication, “Forts Junction to Arcadia track, Magnetic Island (Yunbenun): A self-guided walk”, available from Arcadia Newsagent and Mary Who.

Bring water, snacks, and sun protection.

Sydney singer-songwriter Miriam Lieberman returns to FNQ with a new album close at hand — Bridge In Time, due for release in 2026 — sharing fresh songs shaped by memory, time and belonging. Local musician Lauren Gregory will open the night, followed by two sets by Miriam.

Miriam creates music that bridges cultures and speaks straight to the heart.

With six albums to her name, including "Just Transforming" (named one of The Guardian’s Top 10 Releases of 2021), her songs explore nature, resilience and connection.

Performing solo, Miriam’s rich voice is accompanied by her beautiful playing of the kora — the 21-string West African harp — blending West African rhythmic roots with contemporary folk storytelling.

Miriam’s set will be preceded by a set from Magnetic Island local singer Lauren Gregory.

“All lilting folk tunes overlaid with sprightly kora (West African harp), playful strings and dreamy three-part harmonies — as though Joni Mitchell and Paul Simon had convened in a Bamako back street.” — The Guardian.
