POV: My favourite kind of therapy. 🤎
There’s something pretty incredible about the fact that your body breathes for you every single day, without you having to think about it.
But the moment you bring awareness to your breath, you have an opportunity to influence what’s happening within your nervous system.
And that’s where things get interesting. ✨
Let’s talk about the vagus nerve.
The vagus nerve is a major pathway of your parasympathetic nervous system - the part involved in rest, digestion, recovery and helping your body return towards baseline after stress.
And your breath? It’s one of the ways we can influence this system.
When we breathe slowly and intentionally, particularly with a comfortable, longer exhale, we can encourage a shift towards a calmer physiological state.
🌬️ When you inhale, your heart rate naturally rises slightly.
🌬️ When you exhale, your heart rate naturally falls slightly.
This rhythm is partly influenced by vagal activity.
And this is why we work with the breath at The Aloud House.
Not because one deep breath magically heals your nervous system.
Not because every session needs to end in tears, a breakthrough or some extraordinary experience.
But because your breath gives you an opportunity to participate in something your body usually manages automatically.
To become curious about what you’re feeling.
To reconnect with your body rather than constantly pushing through it.
And to discover that sometimes, the most powerful thing you can do is simply create space to breathe.
Last night, that’s exactly what we came together to do. Different people, different experiences, all sharing the same space to slow down, reconnect and explore what their breath can offer. 🤎
Breathe differently.
Give your body different information.
That’s where regulation can begin.
Breathe. Connect. Regulate.
