Mary River Turtle project - Tiaro Landcare

Mary River Turtle project - Tiaro Landcare The Mary River turtle conservation program is a key projects of a community group, Tiaro & District Landcare Group Aust.

Its aim is to help recover the population of this unique endangered freshwater turtle whose population has plummeted since the 1960's. This endangered species lives on our 'doorstep'. Consequently Tiaro Landcare has taken responsibility of caring for its survival and habitat. The project includes monitoring and protecting nesting banks, along with ongoing research, increasing public awareness and

fund-raising through sale of merchandise. Research is being conducted by PhD candidates from The University of Qld, partly funded by sale of chocolate turtles.

Conserving a threatened turtle

For decades the Mary River turtle was known as ‘petshopii’. Tens of thousands of eggs had been collected, hatched and sold through the pet trade in the 1960’s. Turtles can grow large and live for decades (up to 100 yrs). Consequently, some pet owners become less enthusiastic about their pet and discarded them in the local waterways. The pet trade ceased once it became illegal to collect from the wild in 1974. John Cann, Australia’s legendary Turtle Man, found some of the discarded ‘pets’ and spent 25 years searching for their native habitat. In 1994, it was given its scientific name, Elusor macrurus, the elusive one with a long tail - an apt description. It is now recognized internationally and within Australia, as endangered, meaning it’s future is very insecure. This turtle lives in the Mary River Qld, on the 'doorstep' of Tiaro & District Landcare Group. Consequently this community group has taken responsibility for caring for its survival and habitat. This project includes practical measures such as protecting nesting banks and nests from predation, a public awareness campaign, fund-raising through sale of merchandise (including chocolate turtles) and encouraging research. The goal is to to have a healthy, stable population.
