Berry Celtic Festival 23rd of May 2026.
The annual Berry Celtic Festival, located in the town of Berry N.S.W. is on the 23rd of May 2026 with the gates opening at 8.30am at the Berry Showground. The spectacular street parade commences from Apex Park, on the corner of Prince Alfred Street and Queen Street at 9.30am and proceeds down the main street to the showground. At approximately 10.10 am, the Pipe Bands will be performing their traditional massed bands parade as part of the official opening.
This premiere event, conducted by the Rotary Club of Berry, provides the platform for people to engage with their Celtic heritage and also to have a great day out with the family.
Now is the time to get out your Celtic flags, your favourite Welsh, Breton, Cornish, Irish, Scottish or Manx jerseys, hats and scarves, give them all a dust off and be prepared for a great day of celebration.

This is what happened in Australia on 26 January (credit to Remembering the Past Australia). To all Clan members the 1865 reference to the bushrangers John Dunn, Ben Hall and John Gilbert holding up Kimberley’s pub at Collector in NSW is relevant because before they held up the pub they were bailing up travellers on the Collector road from Goulburn and who should get his horse shot by John Dunn? William Macauley, one of the sons of John Macauley who arrived in Australia from County Tyrone, Ireland, in 1850.

ON THIS DAY – 26th January

1788 – The First Fleet landed in Port Jackson and established the English penal colony of NSW – the first European settlement in Australia.

1798 – The first written record of a koala and lyrebird was made by John Price on an expedition to the south of the Cumberland Plain outside Sydney.

1808 – John Macarthur was arrested sparking the Rum Rebellion, the only successful (albeit short-lived) armed takeover of the government in Australia.

1849 – The Australasian Anti-Transportation League was formed during a public meeting at Launceston, Tasmania.

1865 – Bushrangers Ben Hall, Johnny Gilbert and John Dunn held up Kimberley's Inn in the town of Collector, NSW. Dunn shot and killed the local police officer, Constable Samuel Nelson.

1943 – The Defence (Citizen Military Forces) Act (1943) was passed which provided for the use of conscripts in the South-Western Pacific Zone (SWPZ) during the period of war.

1949 – The Nationality and Citizenship Act was passed. Rather than being identified as subjects of Britain, the Act established Australian citizenship.

1958 – Thousands of Greek men rioted in Melbourne when the bridal ship Castel Felice was nine hours late.

1966 – The Beaumont children were abducted during a visit to Glenelg beach in Adelaide and were never seen again.

1975 – The Workers' Party was launched at a banquet at the Sydney Opera House. The WP was libertarian in principle, demanding less government intervention, as well as being virulently anti-Socialist. The name was subsequently changed to the Progress Party in 1977.

1984 – Aboriginal leader Lowitja (Lois) O'Donoghue was awarded Australian of the Year.

1991 – Monica Seles became the youngest winner of the Australian Open Tennis Championship.

1991 – Professor Fred Hollows was named Australian of the Year.

1992 – Prime Minister Paul Keating gave his Australia Day address in Canberra, saying that Australia must adapt to a changing world and look to Asia if it was to survive economically.

Did you know? 🗣️

The Scottish Gaelic language, still spoken today in parts of the Highlands and Islands, descends directly from the Celtic languages brought to Scotland almost 2,000 years ago!

Gaelic arrived in what is now Scotland around the 4th to 5th centuries AD, when settlers from Ireland established the kingdom of Dál Riata. It was brought by Irish settlers who spread the language.
It was a Brittonic language land before, in the Strath clyde and Pictland.

Experience the heart of Celtic culture and discover more about Scotland’s rich history at the Australian Celtic Festival!

A great Highland Gathering was had in Canberra ACT on Saturday 11 October. Windy it was but it was still a glorious sunny spring day where you could see forever. The Clan Macaulay tent was there answering questions and we even found a lost Macauley.
