Growing up in a household where domestic violence is a constant reality is an experience that shapes a child’s world in profound ways. When this cycle persists throughout childhood and into young adulthood, the effects can be long-lasting and deeply impactful. Understanding the journey of those who have lived through this experience helps foster empathy and provides pathways toward healing and support.

This article outlines the impacts of domestic violence on children as they grow into adults, and offers helpful advice for healing. Published with the permission of A Child With A Voice (website link in the article).

When we strip people of rights, dignity, or safety, we’re not just limiting their freedoms — we’re denying their personhood.

Human rights aren’t optional. They’re the baseline of a just and equal society.
If we want a world that honours humanity, we must defend the humanity of everyone.

Always.

Healing is an act of rebellion in a world that profits from your pain. Because when you heal, you stop being easy to manipulate. You stop accepting the bare minimum.

You stop carrying wounds that were never yours to hold. Systems built on inequality rely on people staying hurt, silent, and unsure of their worth.

Your healing interrupts that cycle. It breaks patterns, challenges norms, and rewrites the stories you were told about who you are allowed to be.

Your healing isn’t selfish.

It isn’t dramatic.

It isn’t “too much.”

It’s courage.

It’s resistance.

It’s the beginning of a new kind of power. The kind no one can take from you.

If you’re healing, keep going.

If you’re trying, start today.

If you’re struggling, you’re not alone.

Your healing is how change begins.
