The Ecclesian Devotional
The Foundation of the Ecclesia
Scripture: Matthew 16:18
"Upon this rock I will build My Church."
After Peter’s confession, Jesus made a declaration that changed history:
“Upon this rock I will build My Church.”
For centuries, people have debated what Jesus meant by “this rock.” But the context makes it clear.
The rock was not Peter himself.
The rock was the revelation of who Jesus is.
The Church is built upon essentially and primarily on the revealed knowledge of Christ.
Not charisma.
Not organization.
Not buildings.
Not popularity of opinion, practices nor tradition. Though any of the above may help if kept within boundary of and aligned by the Spirit.
Christ builds His Ecclesia upon the revelation of His identity.
The word translated “church” here is the Greek word Ekklesia, which means assembly or called-out people.
This means Jesus was not promising to construct an institution. He was declaring His intention to form a people—called out, gathered together, and built upon the revelation of Himself.
The tragedy of many and any generations is that the focus slowly can shift and it does shift; unknowingly.
Instead of building people, we can begin building systems.
Instead of cultivating revelation, we can begin preserving tradition.
Instead of forming a spiritual body, we can be constructing religious structures.
But Jesus never promised to build a physical building and structures as the center of his divine-eternal purpose. But rather He promised to build a people.
And the building process begins in the heart.
Every time Christ is revealed to someone, another living stone is placed into the spiritual house God is building. And this explains why someone can be attending meetings and Christian programs without necessarily being built and added to the house of the Lord
This is why Peter later wrote:
“You also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house.”
The Ecclesia is not something we attend. It is something we become part of.
We are being built together into a living expression of Christ on the earth.
And here is the remarkable truth:
Jesus Himself is the builder.
He did not say, “You will build My Church.”
He said, “I will build My Church.”
Our responsibility is not to manufacture the Church. Our responsibility is to remain aligned with the revelation of Christ so that He can build in and through us.
Where Christ is revealed, the Church grows.
Where Christ is central, the Church becomes strong.
And where Christ is honored as the Head, the gates of hell cannot prevail.
Reflection
Is Christ truly the foundation of my spiritual life?
Am I building my faith on revelation or routine?
How is God shaping me as a “living stone” in His Ecclesia?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, You are the builder of Your Church. Shape my life into a living stone that fits Your design. Keep me anchored in the revelation of who You are. Let my life contribute to the building of Your Ecclesia. Amen.
