❗𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗨𝗽𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲 – 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗦𝘆𝗺𝗯𝗼𝗹𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝘆𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘆’𝘀 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗲𝘁𝘀❗
Andrew Mencinsky, Bohdan Wolodymyriw and Galyna Alyokhina from the Ukrainian Council of NSW (UCNSW), along with Kateryna Argyrou and Justin Senko of the Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations (AFUO), met with representatives of the Offices of the NSW Premier, NSW Police Minister, NSW Attorney General and NSW Minister for Multiculturalism on Thursday 18 June. We expressed the community’s concern and outrage over the recent abhorrent public display in Sydney of symbols of violence against the Ukrainian community and Ukraine.
A productive meeting was held. The government representatives confirmed that:
🔹 The police cars accompanying the display were not IN ANY WAY showing support for the display, but were there as standard practise to ensure public safety
🔹 The police were unable to stop the procession as it was not immediately obvious that any laws were being broken
After our discussions it was agreed that:
🔹 UCNSW/AFUO representatives will meet with the NSW Police Prosecutor to discuss whether the event and the aftermath of online abuse constituted a crime under Section 93ZAA of the Crimes Act
🔹 The NSW Attorney General will investigate the banning of the “Z” Symbol as a prescribed hate symbol in NSW
🔹 The NSW Attorney General will liaise with the Federal Attorney General and the UCNSW/AFUO to commence discussions on banning the “Z” symbol nationally
The UCNSW and AFUO thank the NSW Government for responding so promptly to our meeting request, and we look forward to continuing our discussions and having the “Z” symbol banned and ensuring that displays like this never happen again.
We will keep the community informed of ongoing discussions.
