This week, from 18th to 24th May, we celebrate National Volunteer Week - a time to recognise the incredible contribution volunteers make in building strong, inclusive and connected communities across Australia. ✨

This year’s theme, β€œYour Year to Volunteer”, aligns with the global International Year of Volunteers for Sustainable Development, highlighting the powerful role volunteering plays, not just locally, but around the globe.🌏

A heartfelt thank you to current volunteers and an open invitation for everyone to discover how giving back brings joy and purpose to communities.

Honouring the Spirit of Mateship this ANZAC Day

Today, the DAC Australasian Chapter joins the nation in solemn reflection. As we commemorate the Gallipoli landing and honour all those who have served and sacrificed for Australia, we are reminded of the core values that define the ANZAC spirit: Courage, Resilience, and Mateship.

At the DAC Australasian Chapter, these values resonate deeply. Just as the ANZACs looked out for their mates, our mission is to ensure that every "differently-abled" child and young adult in our community is supported, empowered, and allowed to shine through art and education.

Today we stand togetherβ€”not just to remember the past, but to build a more inclusive and compassionate future for the next generation.

CELEBRATE NEURODIVERSITY - It's a Strength, Not a Flaw

🌈 YOUR BRAIN IS DIFFERENTβ€”AND THAT'S YOUR SUPERPOWER 🌈
The world is finally shifting how it talks about neurodiversity.
It's not:
❌ A disorder to fix
❌ A deficit to overcome
❌ Something to hide
It IS:
βœ… A different way of thinking
βœ… A unique set of strengths
βœ… A valuable perspective
βœ… Part of human diversity

Neurodivergent Strengths:
- Autistic: Deep focus, pattern recognition, loyalty, honesty, unique perspectives
- ADHD: Creativity, spontaneity, high energy, out-of-the-box thinking, enthusiasm
- Dyslexic: Visual-spatial thinking, big-picture perspective, creativity, resilience
- Cerebral Palsy: Resilience, adaptability, unique problem-solving approaches

The Shift:
Instead of asking "How do we make them normal?" we're asking "How do we support them to thrive as they are?"

Australia is Leading This Change:
- Inclusive schools celebrating neurodiversity
- Neurodiversity-affirming therapy practices
- Autistic-led organisations shaping policy
- Research validating creative, alternative approaches
- Communities saying "different = valuable"

To every differently-abled child: Your brain is not broken. Your thinking is not wrong. Your way of experiencing the world adds value. The world needs YOUR perspective. πŸ’™
We could celebrate neurodiversity every day. Through art, music, magic, and connection - we can show young people: "You are enough. You are valued. You can create, perform, inspire, and lead."
Be proud of who you are. 🌟

🌟 Game-changing momentum! Australia just released the National Autism Strategy (2025-31) with a mission to improve inclusion and support for 300,000 autistic people. Plus, research shows cerebral palsy birth prevalence has declined thanks to advances in perinatal care. πŸ™Œ

Community-based programs are proving what's possible when we focus on participation, strength, and real-life outcomesβ€”not just therapy. Whether it's exercise programs that boost physical health AND mental well-being, or professionals learning sensory-aware communication... It's working.

We're building an Australia where disabled people thrive. πŸ’ͺ What changes have YOU seen in your community? Share your stories in the comments!

IIPD, Kasaragod - a project by DAC Trivandrum: First Phase to Be Dedicated in June 2026

The first phase of the International Institute for People with Disabilities (IIPD) in Kasaragod will be completed and dedicated in June 2026. The initial phase will make operational an Early Intervention Centre, advanced therapy units, an art training complex and administrative facilities.

During a media visit and project briefing, Gopinath Muthukad said there has been a longstanding demand from experts and well-wishers to extend the DAC model at Thiruvananthapuram to other parts of the state. The Kasaragod initiative, he noted, is a response to that need and represents a significant step towards ensuring equal opportunities and dignity for persons with disabilities. He also appealed for the continued support and cooperation of the wider community in bringing this important project to fruition.
