Did you know ACSAA collects royalties for our members from around the world? We can now add Japan to that list!

Following a reciprocal agreement signed with the Writers Guild of Japan in late 2024, we can collect royalties on behalf of our members from Japan and, in turn, distribute royalties collected in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand to Japanese screenwriters.

We're proud to support our members as their works travel far and wide 🌏

It's been a while. We've been busy! Group CEO Claire Pullen shares an update on a massive July for AI and copyright advocacy.

Highlights include the PM confirming that unauthorised use of copyright works is theft, panels on AI and copyright at the ALP State Conference, and future consultations with the Attorney-General's Department.

What does ACSAA actually do? Molly Ulm, our Director of Industry and Operations, breaks it down.

We collect licence fees and distribute them as royalties to screen authors across Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand. If you have a writing credit on an audiovisual work, or you've performed an authorship role like screen editing, those royalties could be yours!

Membership is FREE. There are no joining fees.

New name. Same mission. Same fight for your royalties.

After 30 years as AWGACS, we are excited to introduce ourselves as the Authorship Collecting Society Australia Aotearoa (ACSAA).

‘By authors, for authors, for authors' royalties’ has guided us for three decades, and it will continue to do so. Our new name reflects who we represent today: screen authors across Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand, united in the fight for fair secondary remuneration.

We have a new name and a new look, but we're operating the same, and nothing changes for our members. As ACSAA, we are stronger collectively and more ambitious about protecting your rights than ever.

Without Australia's creators, there are no large language models and no AI products. Last year, the Government rightly rejected a proposal to let AI companies use our work for free.

Now the same companies are back with a different slogan. They want to go from asking permission to asking for gratitude.

No use of our creative content without permission and payment. Add your name. Sign our open letter: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/WBXGKN7

A quick update from AWGACS CEO Claire Pullen on what's been happening these past couple of weeks!

Major AI companies have the resources to license creative works from Australian artists and writers to train their models. Instead, many are choosing to invest heavily in attempts to weaken our copyright laws.

Australia is doing important work to set a strong precedent for creative rights internationally. Let's not undermine that progress.

"These LLMs are built on stolen works ... these models do not work without the copyrighted works of my members and other creators."

ICYMI, here is part of the Group CEO of AWG and AWGACS, Claire Pullen, giving her opening statement as witness at last week's inquiry into data centres at NSW Parliament.
