This International Human Rights Day (10 December), we’re calling on Australia to take action on human rights commitments sought by lead NGOs in a joint coalition report for Australia’s 4th Universal Periodic Review (UPR). You can check out the report via the link in our bio.

Australia’s human rights record will face scrutiny in January 2026 when the Australian Government appears before the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva for its major human rights review, the UPR. Member states will comment and make recommendations on Australia’s compliance with international human rights obligations, and Australia will also have an opportunity to voluntarily commit to human rights improvements.

Trans Justice Sydney has endorsed the joint coalition report, and has written to the Attorney General Michelle Rowland () to highlight some of the key changes we would like to see in the human rights landscape, including for trans and gender diverse people.

Check out the joint coalition report (link in our bio) to learn more about the range of human rights commitments being sought in the lead up to the UPR.

If you have capacity, you can also write to the Attorney General Michelle Rowland ([email protected]) ahead of the UPR, highlighting 3-4 main asks from the joint coalition
report that you’re passionate about.

Our thanks to the UPR NGO Coordinating Committee, amongst others, for all your work on this campaign, including , , and .

The inquiry into Australia’s youth justice and incarceration system is accepting submissions until 19 December 2025. If you have lived experience of the youth prison system, or you’re a group/organisation with subject matter knowledge, do consider making a contribution. The inquiry webpage is linked in our bio.

This inquiry first opened in September 2024, was then stalled, then re-opened late this year. Unfortunately, the original inquiry didn’t shine much of a light on the experiences and needs of LGBTQ+ young people involved with the prison system. Notably, LGBTQ+ people are overrepresented in the prison system [1], and this is a disproportionately an issue for First Nations people, people of colour and people with disabilities in the community. Additionally, the unique and intersecting harms faced by, and needs of, LGBTQ+ communities involved with the prison system are often overlooked [2]. The re-opened inquiry provides an opportunity to provide input about the challenges and needs of LGBTQ+ young people.

If you have relevant lived experience, are an organisation or group with relevant knowledge, and have capacity, do consider making a submission.

Join us on Tuesday 16 December from 5.30pm to celebrate what the trans community have collectively achieved in 2025!

(This is just a casual social event - no formal discussions or speeches or anything. The only requirement is to have fun 😡)

All welcome, including allies, families, kids, dogs and blahaj!

Bring: picnic foods, blankets, fun park activities.

Where: Camperdown Memorial Rest Park, a four-minute walk from Newtown Station.

We will find a space somewhere in the north part of the park, viewable from the public toilet block and the parking on Federation Road. Look for the pink parasol!

November the 19th is World Toilet Day! Given its intersection with Trans Awareness Week, we particularly want to highlight the importance of safe and inclusive bathroom facilities for trans and gender diverse people on this day. Check out the links in our bio to 1) email your state representative to fix public toilets in NSW and 2) access a letter template that can be used to provide feedback to facilities about the need for all gender toilets.

We will be at  and Friends Laneway Markets tomorrow, Saturday 15 November in Petersham, 10am - 4pm. We will be sharing a stall with the excellent Inside Out LGBTQIA+ Prisoner Solidarity Network! Inside Out distribute a quarterly newsletter by and for incarcerated LGBTIQA+ people and allies into prisons across the continent.

Come by the stall to sign a petition, connect and let us know what's important to you in the fight for trans justice in 2026 and beyond. We will have a craft station ready for people to write a holiday message of solidarity and support to an incarcerated LGBTQIA+ community member during the holiday period.
