A THORN IN OUR NATION
The Westralian Abolitionists assembled at the "Grow Your Own" Cactus Statues in Perth's C*D to agitate a culture that has grown comfortable with the wilful slaughter of its children.
Jon reports: I had a good conversation with three young ladies. One of them was laughing at me and mocking the movement, but it didn't really bother me. They eventually all came up to talk to me, and the other two, who were more open to having a conversation, engaged with me. They asked me a bunch of questions, and I responded. I kept pointing back to the fact that both they and I were once in our mothers' wombs and our lives were meaningful and precious even then (Job 31:15, Psalm 139:13-14). The third friend who was scoffing at the beginning got frustrated that the conversation was actually getting meaningful, and she left halfway.
Lunae also spoke to one of these girls for a very long time. At the end, she understood but clearly rejected the gospel - essentially, “God doesn’t exist and I hate Him”.
We must not let a foolish friend pull us away from learning what is true and good. Young people need to choose their friends wisely because bad company corrupts good character. The rest of the conversation went well, and the two friends thanked us for the chat; we shook hands, and that was the end of that.
Unfortunately, it wasn't just unbelievers who opposed the movement, but also those who claimed the name of Christ…
Annelise and Melvin shared about an interaction they had with two girls, one of whom seemed to have a lot of bible knowledge but didn’t agree with us coming out to talk to people. She claimed we were sinning because we were rage-baiting people and not sharing the Gospel. The gist of their argument was, "Don't do this, just share the gospel. There's no point in telling people about God's standards without telling them who God is." It became clear, however, that they in fact supported abortion, yet by jumping from one objection to another, they didn't allow for a conversation on the heart of the matter.
Jon reflects: I think this is something we're going to have to get used to - other Christians antagonising us. Sometimes they're also on their own journey of learning and ignorance and will make rash and rude judgements on other brothers and sisters like us.
Christian unity is desirable, but when I read the book of Acts and the Epistles, it's quite evident that Christian relationships can get very messy because we're still affected by sin. Paul had to confront Peter for being a coward. John Mark ran away from Paul and Barnabas. The Corinthian church had a lot of internal conflict and acted in the flesh. Even in my own evangelism work, I've had to defend what I was doing to fellow believers and even my own family members when I was just sharing the gospel with strangers.
But that doesn't mean the Christians who are against us aren't necessarily false believers; they can just be ignorant or swayed by the world, and it's a good opportunity to plant seeds in them too.
Nevertheless, as some Christians opposed, some missionaries from Texas joined the crew for the afternoon. It was a time of mutual fellowship and encouragement.
Abolish Abortion Australia is a movement of the church to be a prophetic voice calling for justice in a culture of death. We are also a movement to the church, a prophetic voice calling Christians to repent of their apathy while their neighbours are slaughtered.
People may consider us the thorn in their side as we agitate the culture of death, but the thorn is our sin of apostasy and child sacrifice. We are the immune response warning the body of the infection, the bad conscience warning of our guilt before a holy God.
"Zion shall be redeemed by justice, and those in her who repent, by righteousness. But rebels and sinners shall be broken together, and those who forsake the Lord shall be consumed."
(Isaiah 1:27-28)
