For decades recreational pursuits have been under attack with Shooters, Fishers, 4WD, Riders, Campers, fosickers and more, constantly under threat from increasing legislation and lockout.

🚨 Australian Recreation Union GIPA reveals shocking lack of evidence behind December 2025 fi****ms law changes

Following the rushed passage of the Terrorism and Other Legislation Amendment Act 2025 in December 2025 — which imposed major new restrictions on law-abiding recreational shooters including firearm ownership caps, limits on certain action types and magazine capacities, mandatory gun club membership, and more — the Australian Recreation Union applied under the Government Information (Public Access) Act 2009 (NSW) for internal reports and risk assessments from the NSW Fi****ms Registry.

We sought critical information including:

• Risk analysis studies on the number of fi****ms owned by licence holders in NSW
• Reports on duration of fi****ms licences held
• Analysis of long arm action types and magazine capacities
• Data on gun club memberships and whether they improve safety outcomes
• Meeting minutes with shooting associations (particularly regarding landowner pest control authorisations)
• Records from National Fi****ms Agreements meetings and law enforcement discussions
• Recent licence application statistics

The NSW Police Force / Fi****ms Registry’s official response.

Most of the requested risk analysis studies, reports (including recommendations), and meeting minutes are not held.

This is deeply concerning. The Labor government pushed through sweeping changes to the Fi****ms Act with minimal consultation and apparently without proper, up-to-date internal risk assessments or evidence from the very Fi****ms Registry tasked with administering the laws.

No data. No detailed analysis. No meaningful engagement with the shooting community before dramatically altering the rules for hundreds of thousands of legitimate recreational shooters.

Recreational shooters and the broader community deserve evidence-based policy, genuine consultation, and transparency — not knee-jerk legislation rushed through parliament.

The ARU will continue to fight for fairness, proper process, and data-driven decision making. We’ve paid the processing charges and will keep you updated on any further releases.

Do you believe this government is attacking the working class?

🚨 Think again if you think this is only about “rich investors.”

The changes to negative gearing in the 2026 Budget are a direct assault on everyday Australian workers — especially small business owners, tradies, sole traders, and families who run their own businesses while trying to build a future through property.

Here’s exactly why it’s devastating for the working class:

• Cashflow destruction for the backbone of Australia: Millions of working Australians rely on negative gearing to offset rental losses (interest, repairs, rates) against their business income or wages. From 12 May, new residential properties can only deduct those losses against rental income. That means your tax bill spikes when your business has a slow month.

Every extra dollar to the ATO is money you can’t use for wages, tools, stock, apprentices, or keeping the doors open.

• Small business owners ARE the working class: Tradies, cafe owners, consultants, retailers, and family operators — we’re the ones employing most Australians. We work harder than anyone, take all the risk, and use property as our safety net and super. This policy rips that away, forcing many to cut staff, delay expansion, or close entirely.
• It kills jobs and crushes local economies: Less property investment = less work for electricians, plumbers, painters, cleaners, real estate agents, and suppliers — all small businesses themselves. Construction slows, maintenance dries up, rents get pushed higher, and regional towns suffer the most.
• Punishing aspiration and hard work: This isn’t helping first-home buyers — it’s attacking the working people who’ve already worked their way up and now invest responsibly. The government is changing the rules mid-game to punish the very people driving Australia’s economy.

This isn’t housing reform. It’s economic sabotage aimed at the working class and small business Australia.

We warmly welcome Premier Chris Minns’ announcement of increased funding for the NSW Fi****ms Registry, including additional staff and resources to deliver faster and better service to law-abiding fi****ms owners across the state.

The Australian Recreation Union strongly supports this positive initiative. Better resourcing means less red tape and improved processing times.

🚨 The Australian Recreation Union is calling for a full independent inquiry into ALL laws in New South Wales!

We’ve seen a string of laws rammed through lacking evidence — not just firearm laws, but ones attacking freedom of speech etc most of which are heavily impacting our daily lives, businesses, and the Australian culture. Many have already been exposed as lacking any real justification.

We’re working with several politicians to launch this petition and need strong public support to drive it forward.

Enough is enough. Laws must be based on ABSOLUTE necessity only and with overwhelming evidence the law is needed before you impact the lives of Australians.. We should all seek to repeal of all non-evidence-based laws.
