People who don’t fish often struggle to understand why anglers—especially carp anglers—are so hooked on the sport. To them, it can look like nothing more than sitting by a lake for hours waiting for something to happen. But anyone who fishes knows it’s miles deeper than that. It’s the anticipation, the peace, the connection with nature, and that electric moment when a carp finally rips off with the bait. The long hours spent watching the water, reading signs, choosing rigs, and chasing the perfect spot are all part of the craft. Non-anglers don’t see the dedication behind pre-baiting, fine-tuning a setup, or the heart-pounding surge of a carp bending a rod into battle.
For most of us, the addiction started young—not with carp, but with the simple joys of float fishing for roach and rudd, feeling a tench thump in the margins, or watching a big, bronze bream roll on the surface. Those early sessions with a basic rod and a tin of maggots built the foundations of a lifelong passion. It was in those moments, watching a float dip or a feeder tip tremble, that we learned watercraft, patience, and respect for the sport. And that’s something you can’t teach to someone who’s never fished—it’s not just about the catch. It’s the journey, the memories, and everything that happens in between.
