The Story of Sydney Chinese Lions
The Lions Club of Sydney Chinese Inc is a member of Lions Clubs International, an international non profit community service organization, upholding a common motto “WE SERVE”. It has now been 95 years since Melvin Jones established the first Lions club in USA in 1917. A typical Lions year begins on 1 July and ends on 30 June in the ensuing year. Today, there are Lions clubs in 206 countries and geographical areas all over the world. In District 201N5, which covers the Sydney area and Norfolk Island, there are some 65 clubs with around 1,650 members. Amongst these, there are 7 Chinese-based clubs. Sydney Chinese Lions is the first of all Australian Chinese-based clubs chartered in April 1995. Currently, Sydney Chinese Lions comprises 108 Active Members and 5 Associate Members. In membership terms, the club enjoys top ranking in District N5.
The above picture was taken at the Club’s 23rd Anniversary Charity Ball held at the Grand Ballroom of the International Convention Centre Sydney, Darling Harbour. Club President Lion PDG Dr Anthony Cheung welcomed the Hon Gladys Berejiklian MP, Premier of NSW and District Governor Lion Ron Gattone and other dignitaries to their midst.
