đź’™ We love hearing feedback like this!

Our goal is always to create sessions that are informative, engaging and practical, while making participants feel comfortable asking questions and sharing their experiences. Hearing that these mums left feeling empowered about their health is exactly what we hope for.

Two very different conversations, but one thing in common: the power of creating safe spaces for people to talk about their health.

This week we delivered two sessions with – a Women’s Health session for a Burmese women’s group and a Men’s Health session for a Syriac group.

The Women’s Health session was filled with laughter, questions and shared learning. Menopause was discussed openly, with participants exploring the physical and emotional changes that can occur during this stage of life and sharing practical insights and experiences in a supportive environment.

The Men’s Health session prompted thoughtful discussion about health, work and wellbeing, with participants reflecting on some of the challenges they have faced since settling in Australia. The group was particularly engaged in learning about the National Lung Cancer Screening Program, asking questions about eligibility, the screening process and the importance of early detection.

These sessions are a reminder that health education is about so much more than information. It is about connection, trust and creating opportunities for people to learn from both healthcare professionals and one another.
Thank you to for partnering with us, and to our wonderful volunteer health educators, Olivia and Jerath, for sharing your time, knowledge and enthusiasm with these groups.

Meet Sophie đź‘‹đź’™

Sophie is one of our incredible volunteer healthcare professionals and has already facilitated SEVEN health education sessions with The Water Well Project, helping deliver trusted health information to communities from migrant, refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds.

One of Sophie’s favourite parts of facilitating sessions is seeing people share their experiences, ask questions and connect across language barriers through smiles, body language and conversation.

She also shared that volunteering with The Water Well Project has influenced her own clinical practice, particularly through using more “teach-back” methods to ensure that patients actually understand their health and medications.

Sophie reminded us of something we see every day in our sessions: many people receive health information through family and friends. It reinforces how important trusted, accessible and culturally safe health education really is.

Thank you Sophie, for the care, warmth and compassion you bring to every session đź’™. We are very lucky yo have you!

Today is National Healthy Ageing Day!

Navigating healthcare, aged care and carer support systems can be overwhelming - even for people who speak English fluently and understand the system well.

Around 1 in 6 Australians are aged 65 and over, and more than one-third of older Australians were born overseas.

For older people from migrant, refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds, barriers like language, low health literacy, social isolation and unfamiliarity with services can make accessing support even harder.

At The Water Well Project, we help older people and their families better understand healthcare, aged care, prevention, chronic disease management, interpreters, referrals and where to seek help.

Through trusted, community-based sessions led by healthcare professionals and supported by interpreters, we create safe spaces for people to ask questions, build confidence and connect with support earlier.

Healthy ageing should not depend on how confidently someone can navigate a complicated system.

🩺❤️ Are you an AHPRA-registered healthcare professional based in Sydney with a passion for health equity?

Join The Water Well Project and be part of delivering culturally responsive health education to people from migrant, refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds.

Our sessions are delivered in trusted community settings, alongside accredited interpreters, creating safe spaces for open, two-way conversations about health. This approach not only improves health literacy, confidence and access to care, but also helps break down barriers that too often prevent people from seeking support.

As part of our volunteer community, you will build valuable skills in communication and culturally safe practice, while gaining deeper insight into the lived experiences of the communities we work with.

This is more than volunteering. It’s a chance to make a meaningful impact while growing as a healthcare professional.

✨ CPD points (RACP, ACEM, RANZCOG)

There are still a few more days for you to register to join us! Register via our Volunteering page on our website.

This week marks Global Public Health Week, a global initiative highlighting the importance of prevention, equity and access.

Public health is often defined as “the art and science of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting health through organised efforts of society.”

Those organised efforts are our healthcare system, our services, and the structures designed to keep people well. But they only work if people can actually access and understand them.

For many people, especially those from migrant, refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds, that is not always the case. Language, unfamiliar healthcare systems, and not knowing what services exist or how to access them can make even basic health decisions harder than they should be.

That’s where we come in.

At The Water Well Project, we sit in that space between healthcare and community, helping bridge the gap.

Through clinician-led conversations in trusted community settings, we make health information clearer, more accessible, and easier to act on. We fill in the knowledge gaps and we empower people with the knowledge and skills to achieve better health outcomes.

Because public health only works when it works for everyone.

Today we welcomed almost 40 healthcare professionals to The Water Well Project community at our Melbourne New Volunteer Training. ❤️

Final year medical students, doctors, nurses, pharmacists and allied health professionals — all stepping forward to support migrant, refugee and asylum seeker communities.

They are now equipped to communicate health information clearly, work effectively with interpreters, and deliver culturally responsive education that builds understanding, trust and confidence in diverse communities.

Thank you to everyone who joined us today — we’re so excited to see you out in community facilitating sessions.

Each new volunteer brings us closer to meeting the growing demand for our free, community-based health education.
