At Katona Primary School, Empower Projects is supporting a community-driven approach by providing agricultural inputs that enable the school and community to produce maize and soybeans for their school's feeding program.

Beyond providing resources, this approach is strengthening local ownership, self-reliance and sustainability. The community is not simply receiving support—they are actively contributing to solutions that benefit their children and school.

From cooperatives strengthening local livelihoods to school gardens providing meals and solar-powered classrooms, every initiative is driven by local knowledge and resilience. Every child deserves the tools to learn and thrive

At Katona primary school in Dowa, Empower Projects distributed textbooks to learners, helping make teaching and learning easier and more effective.

Beyond improving access to learning materials, the initiative is helping learners build a stronger reading culture, participate more confidently in lessons, and improve their learning outcomes, while reducing the burden on teachers and schools with limited resources.

A mind opening lesson. Strong communities are built by people who participate.

At Khula Cooperative in Ntchisi, members are learning that active participation is key to building a successful and sustainable cooperative.

When members come together, share ideas, take responsibility and actively participate in group activities, they create stronger cooperatives, stronger communities and greater opportunities for everyone.

We practice because it helps communities grow food in ways that work with nature rather than against it, building long‑term resilience to climate shocks. By restoring soil health, reducing input costs, and strengthening local food systems, permaculture empowers families in and to nourish themselves sustainably and independently.

I'm Alice Mukona Gadi, the Cooperatives Coordinator . Working in rural communities has given me the opportunity to step beyond the office and experience development where it truly happens. Every visit to a farm, school, cooperative, or community meeting comes with a new story, a new challenge, and a new lesson.

From listening to farmers share their experiences, learning how communities solve challenges with the resources they have, to witnessing small initiatives grow into meaningful change, these moments keep me motivated to do more.

Fieldwork has also taught me that professional growth is not only about gaining technical skills. It is about learning to communicate with different people, understanding their realities, building relationships, solving problems, adapting to unexpected situations, and appreciating the power of community participation.

Every day in the rural areas challenges me to learn, think differently, and become better at what I do. The field is not just where I work; it is where I continue to learn, grow, and find purpose in the work I do.

Mphanga Primary School’s irrigation project is creating an opportunity to generate income even in the dry season.

Mr Mesa the chair person of PTA explained that when fresh produce is scarce and prices rise more money will be made which will enable them to resolve some of the school's financial problems.
