Dear Trainee,
Are you training flexibly or considering training flexibly in future? This update contains useful and essential information for you.
The policy framework:
1. The RACP Flexible training policy can be found at http://www.racp.edu.au/page/education-policies
2. The NSW Health Policy Flexible Work Practices Policy (PD2005_087) http://www.health.nsw.gov.au/policies/pd/2005/PD2005_087.html
3. You should also refer to your local area health service policy's on flexible work practice from your HR department (essentially a distillation of the NSW Health Policy).
10 essentials of flexible training (FT = flexible training/-ee)
1. FT is supported by both RACP and NSW Health Policy.
2. Flexible trainees are entitled to the same training opportunities as their full-time colleagues, and at the same time are subject to the same college and local area network requirements regarding training/working (including rural placements), and have the same responsibilities.
3. FTs are required to fulfill the same PREP requirements as full-time trainees per calender year. This is not on a pro rata basis.
4. FT's accrue leave on a pro rata basis, i.e. if 0.5FTE (working 2.5days/week on average), a FT accrues 0.5 of 20 days leave i.e. 10 days - which enables FOUR CALENDER WEEKS of annual leave (4 x 2.5 days/week). This is frequently misunderstood.
5. FTs in a job-share arrangement are not required to cover each other's leave. They may choose to, however.
6. FTs do not accrue ADOs.
7. FTs are paid for hours worked. Overtime penalties only apply if hours worked in one week exceed the award hours (i.e. full-time hours). Usual Sat/Sun/PH penalties do apply.
8. All queries re FT should be addressed to their direct manager (e.g. DPT, Chief RMO).
9. All queries re training requirements should be addressed to the RACP. It is your responsibility to ensure you submit/fulfill your training requirements.
10. FT has many challenges but is a wonderful opportunity to balance work and other commitments, and for many offers the only viable option of continuing with training.
If you still have difficulty accessing flexible training after following points 8 and 9 above, then please contact the NSW Trainees' Committee for further advice on [email protected].
