Paws & Recover

Paws & Recover Paws & Recover helps with short-term emergency pet respite care to alleviate peoples worries and fears during times of adversity.
(1)

Paws and Recover is a registered Not For Profit Organisation establishing a social media following of volunteers to support people by sharing the care of their pets during a health crisis and difficult times. Through a network of volunteers, Paws and Recover offers short-term practical help such as dog walking, respite petcare, fostering, feeding, transporting pets to vets and support in assisting

people care for their animals during times of illness. We aim to offer an alternative to people who have no one to help and feel they have no other options. We help people avoid rehoming, abandoning, neglecting or destroying a pet during their owner’s period of ill health.

**Due to our limited resources based on volunteers, we can only offer short-term emergency help for max 3 months.** Based on our rescue principles we are unable to accept undesexed dogs. An option is to desex whilst in our care. If you are needing our help, our full criteria and application form can be found at https://www.pawsandrecover.com/apply-for-care

Please note we are strictly short term - 1 month / maximum of 3 months. For long term situations that unfortunately have long resolution times, such as homelessness, we are not the best option as we cannot house your pet until you find accommodation. We aim to eliminate any stress for pet owners which enables them to focus on their recovery.

Foster carer or feeder) needed for Sharpei x Mastiff 6 mo dog and Jack Russell about 3 yo and a Cat 9 yo currently located at Bomaderry, NSW.

Request:
"I have a client who is a veteran and has been unexpectedly hospitalized, and he is currently unable to be contacted to confirm important details regarding his pets. As a result, his animals have been left unattended since this morning with no one available to provide care, and they now require urgent assistance.. The client is expected to remain in hospital for approximately three weeks. The dogs are due for their second vaccinations through Shoalhaven Animal Welfare League in one week, and the cat is believed to be fully vaccinated.

About the pets:
The form was completed by a social worker so no information about the pets available. Paws and Recover would like to get them into foster care but will also consider if a local person available to attend daily to walk and feed the pets. The 6 mo dog should be fed at least twice a day and isolation would not be good for his mental health.

To help:
Please email [email protected] with foster or feed Bomaderry in the subject line. Please include your phone number and suburb and is you are able to foster or feed one, two or all three pets.

About Xander and Mia:
Xander is male 12 yo Jack Russel and Mia is an 11 yo female mini Jack Russell. Both are fit for their age and love walks. Playful. When it’s raining they like to curl up. Mia likes to sleep with her soft inside toys. They both feel the cold. Mia F is very intelligent and loves food with a good metabolism. They both love pats on the Belly. Xander was attacked by a large dog with puncture wounds on his ribs so he doesn’t like a big cuddle. Having their hair brushed they love too.

Good with other dogs but will chase cats. they are used to walks. They are good at enclosed dog parks for tiny dogs. Xander will bark for a few minutes on leaving and returning when left at the home but settles.

If you can help:
Please email [email protected] with Xander and Mia in the subject line. Please include your phone number and suburb. Looking for about 2 weeks foster care with maybe some back up walking when they are returned and owner is still recovering.

Foster update - Zara Russian Blue

Original request - Owner lost his partner of 30 years, suffering multitude of health issues and needs Zara cared for until he can get stabilized.

Foster carer update:
1st night - Quite the night here with Zara. She's very scared and hid until I went to bed around 11.30. Then was prowling around all night scratching at the front door until I put a lounge chair in front of it. She's very vocal when scared with a combo of hissing and low guttural meows. She tried to go for me a couple of but I know she's just scared.Zara

subsequent updates
She has a new favourite spot in my wardrobe.
She came out and ate some wet food about 12pm today.

Yes she’s a lot calmer now. Still mostly in the closet but not as distressed.

Hi team. Zara is a little more settled but still spending a lot time in the wardrobe. I did get little pats this morning so she’s slowly warming up to me.

I bought Zara a cheap bed from Kmart and she’s just started using it. All it still in the wardrobe!

Foster carer needed for Jack 3 yo chihuahua - currently at Collaroy, NSW

Request:
From welfare org:
The owner of their dog is in hospital with no expected discharge date, and the family is experiencing financial hardship. Local Vet has very kindly been boarding the dog free of charge for the past two weeks; however, this arrangement can only continue until Tuesday, 2 June,

The family has no extended support available, and while the children are being cared for within our school community, unfortunately no one is able to take in their dog, Jack.

We are urgently seeking a kind and suitable foster carer who would be willing to look after Jack for approximately 2–4 weeks.

If you are able to help or know someone who might be, please reach out. Your support would make a meaningful difference to this family during a very difficult time.

About Jack:
******PLEASE NOTE *****
**********only people with Rescue or Chihuahua experience apply ******

Being boarded at a vet is always stressful and little Jack is nervous and scared. Being in a home environment would be less stressful. Due to his stress, he is exhibiting "bitey" behaviour. This can be typical of a chihuahua as those familiar with the breed would know. Once they bond, they are fiercely loyal and lose the bitey behaviour.

Jack is taken out with a slip lead and always goes to the toilet outside, never soiling his kennel. The staff thinks he would be a real snuggler if he is in a safe quiet foster home. He has a lead permanently on and will walk well and approach nicely but he is only aggressive ( terrified) if you try to touch him. If in same room he is not aggressive, and only lunges if you try to touch him.

Vet staff thinks if he was in a quiet place he would probably sit at your feet or on a lounge with you as long as you did not try to touch him. Has not reacted to other dogs but this is still an unknown factor, so may be better in a place without other dogs. Best in home where someone is home and can gain his trust, so he can relax.

This is a difficult case, please do not apply if you have children, are scared of being bitten or never dealt with a difficult dog. He is only 5 kg but the mighty Chihuahua can be a little crocodile.

To help:
Please email [email protected] with Jack in the subject line. please include your phone number, suburb and your rescue / chihuahua experience

Foster care needed for 3 Pomeranians - currently at Camden, Sydney.

Request:
Owner has been admitted to hospital and has 3 Pomeranians at home. They have not been fed since Saturday ( day of admission)

About the Pomeranians:
Pippy, Skippy and Dippy are three Pomeranians. The request was completed by the social worker so information is limited but they are described as easy going as they are family therapy dogs. We don’t know how they are with cats.

We would consider splitting them up if we cannot find a foster carer who can take all three.

To help:
Please email [email protected] with Pomeranians in the subject line. Please include your phone number and suburb

Foster carer required for BOBBY - 2 yr old male Foxy. Currently located at Caboolture Queensland 4510.

Request:
Owner is in Emergency Dept in Hospital. Unable to return home. Has no family or friends to care for Bobby.

About Bobby:
Bobby is really a sweet boy. A little shy initially, but warms up fast. Good with other dogs & children. He is very quiet & can be crated if needed.

Previous carer has this to say about Bobby:
Bobby was fostered with us for 1 month.. We fell in love with him in 1 day and he is very lovable, house trained, loved walks every morning. He slept on my bed every night but sat up at 5.30am every morning waiting for his harness to be put on to go walking. He is wonderful company for an elderly couple and I shed tears when I had to return him.

He was very possessive of me and growled at delivery man at front door. He is not a dog that barks. Such a dear little pet & so very obedient!

To Help:
Please email [email protected] with BOBBY in the subject line. Please include your phone number & suburb in the email.

Amber has been in foster care since early May.

Amber Update from carer:

She now reacts to when we say Wanna go for a walk?!
And she is q lot more confident while walking, even confidently sniff people instead of shaking and cowering.
I think she’s gained weight too.

Foster Update - Gypsy

Gypsy went into Paws and Recover foster care today. She did not come with much so a visit to our donation shed, meant we were able to give her a harness, a big soft bed, flea / tick treatment, kibble and a car seatbelt clip.

Thank you to all who donated ( Rebecca we got to use one of the harnesses you donated yesterday!)
