National Stroke Week may have wrapped up on 9 August, but for us at SHARE the message remains important all year round. We know regular movement is one of the most powerful ways to support brain, heart and overall health. Moving more and staying active can help manage key stroke risk factors such as blood pressure, heart health and strength — and for people recovering after stroke, gentle, guided exercise can play an important role in rebuilding balance, confidence and independence.

“At SHARE, we’re proud to help build healthier communities by supporting people to stay active, connected and well through affordable exercise and health education programs. Whether you’re focused on prevention, recovery or simply moving more in a safe and social environment, SHARE offers welcoming programs designed to help you keep moving at your own pace.” Adrian Prakash, SHARE CEO.

This National Stroke Week (3 – 9 August), SHARE is encouraging our community to take simple, everyday steps to support long-term health and wellbeing.
Stroke is one of Australia’s leading health concerns, but did you know - many strokes can be prevented?

“Healthy lifestyle habits, including nutritious eating, regular movement and managing risk factors such as blood pressure, cholesterol, type 2 diabetes and weight, can all play an important role in reducing stroke risk. This week, consider one small change you can make to support your brain and heart health — whether it’s adding more vegetables to your meals, going for a walk, or checking in with your GP.” Adrian Prakash, SHARE CEO.

It’s also a great time to learn the F.A.S.T. signs of stroke: Face, Arms, Speech and Time. Recognising the signs early can save lives.

At SHARE, we’re here to help build healthier communities through practical programs that support wellbeing at every age.

International Self-Care Day – 24 July

We love International Self-Care Day! It’s a great mid-year reminder that self-care is critical for overall health – and it doesn’t need to be complicated. Small, realistic habits can help support our physical, mental and emotional wellbeing over time.

At SHARE, we encourage self-care from the inside out — supporting physical health through our exercise classes, while also nurturing wellbeing, confidence and social connection through our wellbeing programs and community events.

Self-care can also mean creating space to rest. Let’s switch off from screens a little earlier in the evening, giving yourself time to unwind, connect and prepare for a better night’s sleep.
Whether it’s joining a gentle movement class, building strength and balance, taking part in a wellbeing program, or connecting with others at a SHARE social event, small steps can make a meaningful difference to how we feel each day.

“Self-care is about looking after the whole person — inside and out. At SHARE, we support older Australians to stay active, connected and confident through exercise, wellbeing and social programs that make healthy ageing achievable and enjoyable,” said Adrian Prakash, CEO, SHARE.

Term 3 starts on 20 July. Visit the SHARE website for the latest updates on upcoming social events, wellbeing programs and the Term 3 exercise timetable.

This National Diabetes Week, SHARE is proud to support the national conversation and help amplify the voices of Australians living with diabetes.

Diabetes affects more than 1.3 million Australians, with rates rising significantly among older people. Australians aged over 65 now account for more than 66% of people living with diabetes — making prevention, support and accessible health education more important than ever.

At SHARE, we know movement matters. Regular physical activity can help reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes, support better blood glucose management, combat insulin resistance and help maintain muscle strength as we age.

“This National Diabetes Week, SHARE is encouraging older Australians to take simple, achievable steps towards moving more. Whether it’s strength, balance, walking, stretching or gentle group exercise, every movement can help support healthier ageing and reduce the risk of diabetes-related complications. Our role is to make movement welcoming, accessible and empowering for the community.” — Adrian Prakash, CEO, SHARE

Throughout National Diabetes Week, SHARE will continue supporting the community with safe, inclusive movement programs that help people build confidence, stay active and take positive steps for their health.

JulyEYE — National Eye Health Awareness Month
This JulyEYE, SHARE is proud to support National Eye Health Awareness Month and help remind Australians to prioritise their eye health.
With research indicating that 75% of vision loss is preventable or treatable when detected early, July is the perfect time to book a comprehensive eye examination and take simple steps to protect your sight.
“Good health supports independence, confidence and quality of life — and eye health is an important part of that. This JulyEYE, we’re encouraging our SHARE community to take a simple but powerful step: book an eye exam, stay informed, and keep looking after the health that helps you stay active and connected.” — Adrian Prakash, CEO, SHARE
At SHARE, we’ll be encouraging our participants to mark their diary and make an appointment for an eye exam — just as they would for any other important health check.
And remember, Australians aged 65 and over are generally eligible for one comprehensive eye test every 12 months.
