Urban Taskforce CEO, Tom Forrest, said that today’s quarterly ABS commencements and completions statistics reflect a sharp downturn in confidence and housing project feasibility.

Today’s data is for the period between the start of the year and the end of March when we saw two interest rate rises (the third came in May) and the start of the war in the Gulf.

Urban Taskforce warned that the impact of the interest rate rises spelt danger for the Housing Accord targets and today’s data shows that this was correct.

Urban Taskforce Australia, CEO Tom Forrest, warned that NSW’s housing shortfall will worsen unless more is done, with the latest approvals data showing the state is only approving around 70 per cent of the homes needed each month to meet its Housing Accord target.

“There is always a drop-off between approvals and building completions, particularly when interest rates go up, so more needs to be done,” he said.

Urban Taskforce’s concerns about NSW’s slow housing approvals were picked up in radio news bulletins across the country, including on 2GB during Ben Fordham Live.

Following an Urban Taskforce media release yesterday saying the latest ABS data shows Australia is still falling well short on housing supply, CEO Tom Forrest told 2GB: “We need to have about 7,000 homes approved to be built every month. At the moment we're getting about 4,500. So, you can see we're well behind.”

The story was picked up in 20 broadcast mentions across 15 radio stations, including 2GB, 2UE, 4BC, Coast FM, 2CHR, 2WEB Outback Radio, Eagle FM, 2CC Canberra, 2CA Canberra, Crow FM, Sonshine FM, Ultra106five and 3KND.

ABS data on new dwelling approvals: consistently under-achieving

Urban Taskforce Australia CEO, Tom Forrest, said today that ABS housing data for new dwelling construction approvals across Australia in May 2026 shows a small decline in May from the data recorded for April 2026. When we are so far behind the targets, we need to improving every month, not going backwards.

However, based on the data over the past 12 months, there is a modest increase in the number of approvals, albeit, well below the numbers required to meet the National Housing Accord targets.
