We are honoured to welcome The Hon Michael Sukkar to the Board of the Australia Saudi Business Council & Forum (ASBC&F).

Michael brings extensive experience in government, public policy, economic reform and national leadership, having served Australia across several senior ministerial portfolios, including:

• Federal Minister for Housing
• Federal Minister for Homelessness, Social and Community Housing
• Federal Assistant Treasurer

During his time in Federal Parliament, Michael developed significant experience across economic policy, taxation, housing, infrastructure, financial services and regulatory reform.

His deep understanding of government, policy and the private sector will bring valuable strategic insight to the ASBC&F Board as we continue strengthening the bilateral economic relationship between Australia and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Michael’s appointment further strengthens our Board as we expand our work supporting bilateral trade, foreign direct investment, business connectivity and strategic partnerships between Australia and Saudi Arabia.

We are delighted to welcome Michael to ASBC&F and look forward to working closely with him as we continue creating new opportunities for Australian and Saudi businesses and strengthening the commercial relationship between our two nations.

We are proud to welcome Nuatali Nelmes as the newest Board Member of the Australia Saudi Business Council & Forum.

Nuatali is a transformative city leader with more than two decades of experience across governance, economic development and urban transformation.

During her decade as Lord Mayor of Newcastle, Nuatali led a period of significant economic renewal, delivering major infrastructure investment, attracting billions of dollars in private investment and helping drive the diversification and revitalisation of one of Australia’s leading regional cities.

As Newcastle’s youngest and second-ever female Lord Mayor, Nuatali championed greater representation of women in leadership and was recognised for her contribution to local government with the prestigious Emeritus Mayor Award.

Today, Nuatali is a Professor of Practice at the University of Newcastle Business School and a Mayoral Mentor for Local Government NSW.

Her experience also extends to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, where she is advising on the establishment and strategic development of best-practice municipal government for one of the world’s most ambitious new city projects, bringing her expertise in governance, economic development, city strategy and urban transformation to the creation of a new global city.

Nuatali’s extensive experience across Australia and Saudi Arabia will bring valuable insight to the Council as we continue to strengthen bilateral engagement, investment and collaboration between our two countries.

We are proud to announce Dr Sarah Hill as a member of the newly formed Board of the Australia Saudi Business Council & Forum.

With extensive experience across Sydney and London, Sarah is currently a Senior Advisor within the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia (PIF), bringing significant expertise in the planning, development and delivery of major real estate and city-building projects.

Previously, as CEO of the expanded Western Parkland City Authority, Sarah led the delivery of one of Australia’s largest and most ambitious city-building projects of the last century.

Her work at the WPCA built upon the vision she co-created as the inaugural CEO of the Greater Sydney Commission. Under Sarah’s leadership, the Commission pioneered new approaches to citizen engagement, measuring and monitoring planning outcomes, and aligning population growth with infrastructure, including the introduction of Australia’s first Place-Based Infrastructure Compact.

Sarah has also served as Deputy Secretary within both NSW Treasury and the NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment, where she fostered a strong culture of collaboration across government, industry and communities.

She brings a wealth of technical and strategic expertise from senior planning roles across NSW and London, as well as leadership roles at HillPDA Property Group.

Sarah’s extensive experience across government, infrastructure, urban development and major investment projects, together with her current work in Saudi Arabia, will bring valuable insight to the Council as we continue to strengthen commercial, investment and institutional ties between Australia and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

We are delighted to welcome Dr Sarah Hill to the Board and look forward to her contribution to the next chapter of Australia-Saudi economic cooperation.

Historic remarks from our President, Sam Jamsheedi, following the arrival of the first ever direct Saudia Cargo flight between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Australia.

This milestone marks the beginning of a new era in Australia Saudi trade, strengthening supply chains, enhancing connectivity and creating new opportunities for businesses in both nations.

The Australia Saudi Business Council and Forum extends its sincere appreciation to everyone who helped make this achievement possible, including His Excellency Dr Majid Al Qasabi; the General Authority for Foreign Trade, particularly His Excellency Mohammed Alabduljabar and His Excellency Mansour AlHuwati; Saudia Cargo; the Saudi Export Development Authority; the Federation of Saudi Chambers; The Honourable Don Farrell; His Excellency Ambassador Miles Armitage and the Australian Embassy in Riyadh; Mr Paul Grimes and Austrade; The Honourable Danny Pearson; The Honourable Melissa Horne; The Honourable Scott Buchholz; The Honourable Joel Fitzgibbon; and The Honourable Michael Sukkar.

We also thank the Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia in Canberra, led by His Excellency Sultan Bin Khuzaim, and the Consulate General of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in Sydney, led by His Excellency Meshare Ben Naheet, together with all Embassy and Consular representatives who travelled to Avalon Airport to mark this historic occasion.

Our appreciation also goes to Avalon Airport, especially CEO Ari Suss and Commercial Aviation Manager David Riley, whose outstanding support helped transform our Memorandum of Understanding into the inaugural flight in just 46 days.

Finally, thank you to the Australian Saudi Logistics Alliance (ASL Alliance), its Board, and all our partners and stakeholders. Together, we have delivered a landmark achievement that will strengthen trade, investment and cooperation between Australia and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for years to come.

What could direct air cargo connectivity between Australia and Saudi Arabia mean for exporters?

Avalon Airport has signed an MoU with the Australia Saudi Logistics Alliance to support the development of a dedicated bilateral cargo corridor.

Many Australian exports currently reach the Middle East through third-country trans-shipment hubs, adding time and complexity to supply chains. More direct services could improve freight reliability and market access for:

• Agriculture and premium food exports
• Pharmaceuticals and healthcare products
• Advanced manufacturing
• E-commerce and high-value freight
• Time-sensitive and perishable goods

The partnership also builds on Saudi Cargo’s planned expansion into Australia, creating new opportunities for exporters, logistics providers and supply chain businesses.

Saudi Arabia is strengthening its global leadership in responsible AI.

During a United Nations session in Geneva, SDAIA presented the Kingdom’s national AI governance framework, highlighting progress in trusted AI systems, data protection, ethical adoption and international cooperation.

Aligned with Vision 2030 and the Year of Artificial Intelligence 2026, this initiative also opens new opportunities for Australia–Saudi collaboration across AI research, digital regulation, cybersecurity and emerging technologies.

Yesterday, the Australia Saudi Business Council & Forum had the pleasure of hosting the CEO of Western Sydney International Airport, Mr. Simon Hickey, and Chief Customer & Commercial Officer, Ms Alison Webster, in Riyadh for a series of high level meetings with key Saudi Government and aviation stakeholders.

The delegation met with GACA, His Excellency Mohammed Alabduljabar, Governor of the General Authority for Foreign Trade, King Salman International Airport CEO Mr. Marco Mejia, Australian Ambassador His Excellency Miles Armitage, Australian Trade Commissioner Ms Bernadette Archibald, and NSW Trade & Investment Commissioner for the Middle East, Mr. Moin Anwar.

The visit highlighted the growing partnership between Australia and Saudi Arabia, with discussions focused on aviation, trade, logistics, and investment under Vision 2030. It also builds on the Council’s recent air freight initiative, which includes Western Sydney International Airport as a future Australian destination for Saudia Cargo operations, strengthening connectivity and creating new trade opportunities between our two countries.
