"You can't quantify the damage that's going to be done"

Zoe spoke to farmer Alison McPhee near Scone about the wildlife on her farm that will be impacted by the New England Renewable Energy Zone transmission line going through her property.

"On our farm you'll see kangaroos, goannas, wedge-tailed eagles, echidnas, all the Australian wildlife and we just work in harmony with them."

But transmission lines are industrial infrastructure, which is far more disruptive to native wildlife than sustainable agricultural practices.

"When you're talking about putting this corridor through, you're actually destroying the natural habitat of our wildlife, as well as destroying the native flora."

Energy grids need transmission - but the New England REZ is not necessary for the grid and will only increase electricity costs for New South Wales residents, while needlessly destroying prime agricultural land and native flora and fauna.

Imagine the government compulsorily acquiring your bathroom.

Farmer George Crouch talks about how the transmission corridor for the New England Renewable Energy Zone will divide his property in two.

When transmission runs through a farmer's property, it's not just the 20% that the lines take up which is affected - it's 100%. That's because farmers need access to all of their property to effectively muster and move their cattle from paddock to paddock.

What may look like 'just an empty paddock' to the government is anything but to the farmer who owns it.

"It's no different to someone sitting in Sydney in their home and the government comes along and says 'We're just gonna take your bathroom' and you say 'Well, I use that bathroom frequently' and they go 'Oh, don't worry about it, you're just gonna have to use someone else's...'"

Prime agricultural land should be used for agriculture, not transmission projects the grid doesn't need.

"The productivity of our farm will be abolished"

That's the threat facing farmer George Crouch because of the New England Renewable Energy Zone.

Fertiliser planes fly at 24 metres above the ground. The transmission lines will be 80 metres high.

That means planes will not be able to fly below 80 metres on George's property, making fertilising completely useless.

George has a feedlot which sits directly under the transmission corridor. He won't be allowed to drive a tractor near the lines once they are built. On his own farm.

"Our productivity and future security is lost". All because of transmission lines that New South Wales doesn't need.

"We've got plans to build this enterprise and grow this enterprise but they've all been snatched away from us".

Prime agricultural land should be used for agriculture, not pointless transmission projects like the New England REZ that will only drive up prices for consumers across the state.

You thought the cost of living was bad now?

Farmer George Crouch warns about what happens when projects like the New England Renewable Energy Zone hit our bills.

It's not just energy bills that go up as a result. Everyday items will get more expensive - at Bunnings, Coles, Woollies...

Transmission lines to support wind and solar projects will run right through George's property, cutting it in half.

And that means cuts to how many cattle he can keep - which cuts the supply of beef on your local supermarket shelf. Which means prices will go up.

Australia needs affordable, reliable energy that doesn't stop farmers from farming on their own property.

"It's devastating and Canberra don't get it."

The NSW government has planned to build transmission lines through prime agricultural land to support the New England Renewable Energy Zone. This is despite serious concerns from farmers regarding the impacts this will have on farming operations, and the fact that this project is unnecessary for the grid and is only being built to support intermittent renewables.

Cattle farmer George Crouch explains the toll the transmission rollout is taking on his family, who live on Waverley Station near Scone.

"My daughter who's seven shouldn't come in and start talking about power lines or what that means for her security or her future, or where she's grown up and the home that she knows."

For farmers like George and his family, it's not just their livelihoods that are impacted by transmission lines - it's their homes, too.

"My children see the anguish in my wife, and my face, and my soul and it's heartbreaking. You want to try and protect your children as much as you possibly can and we feel really, really helpless."

And it's not just landholders that are impacted by transmission projects like this one. The REZ also makes the future uncertain for farm employees, their families, and the regional communities that depend on agriculture for their economic wellbeing.

"We employ five or six people on our property and with that comes their wonderful families and all their children, and I see my greatest responsibility is to protect those people within Waverley and to ensure they have a good future and they're safe."

Farmers like George should not have to worry about the future of their family, their land and their employees. Especially for a project that the grid doesn't need.

"I think it's a total disaster"

That's how Michael, a Chatham Valley local, described the impact to the Oberon Plateau and the Blue Mountains from The Pines Wind Farm, which is planned to have 300m-tall wind turbines built within 50 metres of the Blue Mountains National Park.

"What they're looking at doing is building hundreds of essentially high story structures that catch fire... make a noise, have flashing lights, kill birds.... So, basically I think it's a total disaster and very shortsighted by the government when I think there're a lot of good alternatives that they could be doing to achieve the same result."

"Oberon's workforce would be gone"

That is what local farmer Owen said when we asked him about the fire risk The Pines Wind Farm would introduce to the area.

Putting 300-metre wind turbines near local pine plantations not only introduces another ignition source, but it makes fighting fires much, much harder.

Owen said, "The developers have talked about their ability to fight fire with helicopters and planes... I just don't think that they're aware of the dangers involved when you have a 300 metre tower. You're gonna have a pilot who's gonna have to navigate around the tower, and they're probably not gonna be able to fly below that 300 metre threshold. And by the time that water hits the fire, it'll be evaporated."

This wind farm would unnecessarily increase the fire risk to the local environment - including the World Heritage Listed Blue Mountains National Park a mere 50 metres away. But it also increases the risk for pine plantations.

The pine industry provides steady jobs for the local community, which underpin Oberon's economy. If the pine industry were to leave, Owen says, "the flow-on effect would be catastrophic."

Energy projects should benefit the local community and boost the economy by delivering cheaper energy bills and steady jobs, while managing impacts on the environment responsibly. This project will do none of that.

Farmers are losing lambs because of transmission lines.

Anthony, a local Oberon farmer, shares about how the transmission line along his property has impacted his farm.

It's not just the poles and wires themselves. It's the unpredictability of maintenance.

Anthony can no longer control who comes onto his farm and when. He can't stop Transgrid crews entering his farm to fix the wires, even if it means disturbing ewes in the middle of the lambing season. And that means lambs die.

The more industrial energy infrastructure on farms, the harder it is for farmers.

Anthony says "it wouldn't be worth farming" if they hosted wind towers as well as transmission lines. Because the more corporations have access to a property, the less farmers can maintain control of their own farm.

Australia's prime agricultural land is too precious to hand over to transmission companies and wind developers. Especially for an energy plan that isn't working for Australians.

How wind farms devalue Aussie farmland
